Best .22lr round?
Best .22lr round?
Question
Which .22LR brand and bullet type do you prefer for coon, cat & fox.
Is it better to go with higher Velocity hollow points that frag upon contact or something like the CCI Small Game Ammo that doesn't explode and is lower fps?

Re: Best .22lr round?
For a 22 I like CCIs myself, duds are few and far in between. But I dont know what to tell you about the bullet type. I have always just got the hollow points. Thats just what I like to shoot.
Re: Best .22lr round?
I'm not to picky for my LR rounds. I normally buy Winchester rounds, but I'm looking into what mag round to use. I love hornady vmax .17 rounds wish they had .22 rounds with that tip.
Re: Best .22lr round?
i have a remington 597 that i hunt small game with and in this particular rifle the ammo that shoots the best in it is the cheap federal hollow points that they sell in the 550 round carton.
Re: Best .22lr round?
i prefer the mag too. recently I've been getting 17's in the box. for the price a guy pays for mags you'd think quality control would exist. I've shot everything with a 22lr and it will work but can get finicky on angle range bones. even on the little stuff. started to use the mag years ago and can't say it doesn't work better. tried the 17 and it has all the problems of the 22lr in triplicate. my cousin cornered a bear in the barn with a 22lr pistol it was a long day for both before it got sorted out. I've never laughed so hard in my life. it was the biggest damn mess!
back to your ? though. use a standard slug round nose/hollowpoint. the lighter ones don't punch very hard on thick fur. having shot enough rounds through your gun to know where it shoots at every conceivable range is probably more important then brand.

i have a 17 hmr, and found they fragment on impact. i bought it to shoot grouse but if you dont hit it in the head or neck it blows it up. i agree with pegleg, stick with the standard volocity rounds and find what shoots the best in your gun. 22 mags are great but the price of ammo isnt worth it. i have a bushmaster varmiter and a ruger hawkeye in 223 and you can reload it for less than you pay for those mags, and performance wise there is no compareison.

ferjer in case you didnt know it is illegal to shoot game birds with a rifle in Idaho. You might not want to incriminate yourself on the world wide web. I personally dont care buy it is a law.
Re: Best .22lr round?
i do know it is illeagle to shoot turkeys but never herd that about grouse. besides like i said i dont use one, it is too destructive. i dont know wher you get your info from, from what i have read it is not illeagle
Re: Best .22lr round?
for 22lr i just buy the bulk Winchester you get some duds but cheap and i don't think there is much diff in my opinion, but i do like to use the the 22 mag but it does get a bit expensive

Re: Best .22lr round?
I shoot a single six. So I prefer to shoot shorts or even cb's. They aren't as noisy and do just fine, but most of my shots are close.

Re: Best .22lr round?
cci stingers is the best hands down, but they are exspensive suckers .they have 22 mag like performance nearly.
Re: Best .22lr round?
Hornady 22mag 30gr V-max 2200fps. makes the 17hmr a waste (my dad shoots one). As much velocity with more mass and just flat out does a number on game. I started shooting it a couple of years ago. Prior to that I wanted a 17hmr but the 22mag shooting the v-max is in a different league all together.

Re: Best .22lr round?
CCI mini mag solids. No hollow point. Gun don't like em. besides how much can a 22 caliber bullet expand and still have anything left. They feed good and I have shot thousands of them and do not think i have had any duds. They all work the same and they always work. That is what I like to see.

CCI Stingers a hands down the best .22 LR ammo out there. I use it for coons, but have taken a fox and yote them.
