These Lines have been drawn on Hounds since the 1500s .. Every Running Proformence Breed of Hound were Bred to these Requirements and are still bred this way today by Breeders that Care.

Good thing I'm not a breeder, just a dude who runs some long ears on critters. You can talk all day about this/that dog history and I could really care less. Unless the UKC world hunt happens to be the cornfield where I'm trying to get a young dog off a skunk, I'll never see it. Or any of the dogs who took part in it. If you want to get really frustrated, go buy a bunch of UKC coon bred pups (who's parents weren't big game hunted) and go try to stack up some bear, yotes or cats.

I'm just usually looking for the best dog for ME to hunt in my conditions on my desired game. I could give a rat's ass what they look like if they catch better than what I've got.

This post to me is somewhat entertaining...EVERYONE on here would say ability comes before looks...seems silly to ask. I think what some are saying is they think they can have both; maybe they can?! Is all I know is if anyone hunts, they will always pick ability over looks.. Always.

No offense intended, as joking about beagles is a standing joke between me and a fellow hunter who reads this sight as well. She is a fine looking beagle and you should bow to no one on here, you posted proof of her abilities earlier.

this post is a honest one but is being taken to the wrong conclusions. my one example. i ride a big,raw boned, slab sided, hammer headed, cow hocked, permanently pissed mare on my jaunts through the brush n rocks. why her? she gets in the trailer in the morning. no pissin around, can walk, crawl or plain drag her ass through about anything I point her at. if i ask her to put a little more effort into it she does. she doesn't dance around game, is a as easy as anything I've seen to pack game on. she's damn near thorn proof, makes a good effort to bring me home with her.
Her most endearing traits. the world can be going to hell around her and she still works with me. the hounds strike a track she perks right up. and when those hounds tree she is hot on their ass and just as excited about it as they are. and this leaves me free to enjoy the day.
I'm not saying there isn't room for PRETTY horses. I feed some and deal with their issues. weak tendons' thin hides etc. would I buy her wrapped in one of those pretty hides hell yes! is she perfect no. so when she gets bred it will be with the intent of improving on her weaknesses and keeping her attributes.
I also believe in the same strategy with hounds. now women on the other hand I may place a little to much value in the chrome! I have my faults too.

No worries, Scott. Just a little something lost in translation.

As the only two breeds premitted to be run on deer here are Beagles and Bloodhounds, I should be used to the sparring.

My first thoughts is this, heck it doesnt matter what the hound looks like, if your happy great, you have to feed it. I've seen some very fine hounds, which was dam ugly, but got the job done in every way. I have a doctor buddy, which has half plott, walker crossed. Now that is just asking for ugly. But bottom line, they fit him, and are real bear dogs. Bumpkus is his lead dog,and fits his looks But as good of cold trailer as anyones. As for me, I do my best to breed for all the above and looks besides, which is possible. The old timers around here, kept some good looking dogs, for fast races, and I'm trying to continue what they built, as many of them folks has passed on, and my grandfather is now 82. We hunt bear, which differ's from western folks and lion. I've been breeding mostly for myself for over twenty years, I'm on my sixth generation of these dogs, and they fit me, and look good to. I've had several guys want to breed to these dogs, the first thing i want to see is her build, how she hunts, and then five generations on both sides, most guys cant offer the answers, good looking or ugly, along with all the trait requirements to catch game, your going to continue the looks also, to the next generation, depends on what you want to feed.

Correct everybody would say that, but how many guys do you see that get that super good lookin hound that can't even chase his own tail and he gets an extra 2 or 3 years of dog food before he gets culled that he wouldn't have got if he was a short little ugly thing? I have a buddy that has a super good looking bluetic bitch. she has the nastiest bark, no handle whatso ever, no brains, growly, gatory, only thing she will chase is a muley. we even led her to a lion tree and she left it to chase deer. year in and year out I tell him to get rid of her, he has 8 month old pups that can run circles around her and he is feeding more dogs than he will ever be able to use, but this year he will try once again to make her his superstar. this will be her forth season. I am probably guilty of this at a much smaller scale. I will not feed a dog that won't hunt, but when it is try outs I accidentally find myself favoring those good lookin long legged painted up long eared buggers. on the flip side of that, my best dog, best dog I have ever seen, is a short legged barrel chested beagle looking dog. so I guess in the beginning it's looks over ability, but at the end of the day it's ability that puts pictures in your album.

Oh man it happens all the time. but, I don't beleive it happens cause that dog is good lookin. I think it happens cause that hound guy is not a houndsman. Maybe they don't cull cause their too attached or something, but, I don't think it normally happens due to looks.

Sure have I have always hunted plotts and walkers. Have a 3/4 plott 1/4 walker pup now. I think plotts are a fine looking hound. But my point was the dog could be a three legged 1 eyed pink with purple poker dots if it is treeing or bayed up it's a fine looking hound.
