Animal shelter Hounds

about a week ago or so i went over to the animal shelter and adopted a hound. to my surprise from not being hunted at all he has come a long way. in two days he was running track. 3rd nite he had his first tree. why would anyone want to throw away a decent dog?? ive gotten 16 coons with him in 4 nites of huntin him. all i did was drag a dead coon around for an hour with him. just wanted to see if anyone has ever tried this.

I got a hound from the shelter, she was a perfect lookin hound with looks to spare. She didnt turn out at all no matter what we did with her. We put her with other dogs and she never caught on, she would run from a house cat. I know some turn out but I will never ever get a shelter hound again.

I had a hound from the pound that treed quite a few lions and coons for me. He was as mean as they come though.

yeah we did try one just b4 him but she growld at my yr old boy so she went straight back to the pound.

if more shelters made it easier to trial specialty breeds I am sure there are some fine hounds setting in shelters. lost hounds, stolen hound that escape ,poor starved dogs picked up by bunny huggers who take them home only to decide after the third house cat the dog is evil, well bred pups that go to the wrong people , the list is probably very long. great to hear she worked for you.

I got a little female from the pound once. I took her to work with me tied her leash to a post for like 30 sec. and ran inside. she chewed through the leash and was gone. I found her later took her home and put her in the kennel went inside to get her some water came back and she was gone. I'll bet she had some hunt in her to bad I never got to find out. This shelter was letting me trial this dog. They didn't seemed to surprised or upset when I told them I lost her. I only had her for like 3 hours.

out of three dogs I tried from the pound, One mean one would tree everything but you could not hunt him with other males or it'd be a fight every time. A redbone on a week trial, everytime we turned him out with the other dogs he'd run back to the truck, and a walker that would follow other dogs, and he made it to quite a few lion and coon trees but i don't think he had any hunt in him. We'd go into the shelter with a coon hide in our backpack and take the dog for a walk and see if they'd show interest in the coon hide and if they did we'd take them.
After I starting buying pups from proven parents - I could never advise someone to try the pound - I think most of the dogs that are in the pound are in there for a reason and it's like finding a diamond to get a really good one, which it sounds like you may have.

I got my lurcher from the pound.

I think there are plenty of useful dogs in pounds. But as stated above, it's tough to sort them out and find that diamond.

I always wonder about people that keep hounds and beagles strictly as pets. They are just so hard to keep home.

I would only get a dog from ones that I knew the parents or one that I bred myself. That does not mean that a lot of good young dogs don't end up in the shelters. The only dog that I ever got out of a shelter was my first dog. She was 8 months old , I was 14. As soon as she new what I wanted her to do, tree coons, she treed coons and quit deer. When I got her on a bobcat she treed it and started treeing them as we came to them. When I took on bear she treed the first one I put her on. She taught me hound hunting I hunted on my own for years no one to teach me other than what I read and was I told and that was probably a good thing. I did not have to learn or relearn what was command knowledge. I did not know How good of a dog I had at the time. But looking back she was one of the very best dogs that I have ever owned if not the best. Every dog deserve a chance. Reading what people on here say about culling I feel there is a lot of good dogs culled for the wrong reasons. Culling sometimes is done because of lack of knowledge or the inability of the person to train or get the best out of a dog. The owners fault not the dogs. Dewey
