Passing on a lion
Passing on a lion
What do you who hunt in areas where dogs bay lions instead of treeing them (desert areas), if, for whatever reason you don't want to shoot that lion? Can you call your dogs off?
Re: Passing on a lion
I've never been able to. Usually have to sneak up and act like I'm gona pet and praise them and then I snatch em up quick trying not to scare the lion. get down to the last couple dogs and it's a pain if the cat decides to run. I'm sure if a guy trained for that aspect you could easilly teach them to come off when called, but I don't like the idea of them leaving game. right now I could leave them treed and come back a week later and find a skinny bunch of hounds still treeing like they just caught it. the only reason I know that is it happened on accident in deep snow couple years ago. we couldn't figure out where they had went the wind blew out the track, snow was deep and after we did figure it out it took a couple days of snowshoeing to get to them. when we got there they were treeing as hard as they would have the first day. I don't know if I would sacrafice that just to be able to call them off. maybe you wouldn't have to sacrafice it, it just seems like that to me.

I don't even have to ride up to my dogs to call them off , I just say dogs let's go.
Houndenmen or whatever, sorry if I missed it but I talked to lloyd yesterday that knows you and you might want to hide and listen a bit because as old Gus said to PI on Lonesome Dove you are way over your head.

Re: Passing on a lion
what the hell are you talking about mike? and who the hell is lloyde? Your a weird dude. If you have trained your dogs to do that without sacarificing any stickiness at the tree then that is great. I never said it couldn't be done, I just said that I didn't dare do it. Your probly better at teachin dogs than me. I would love to here more about how I'm over my head and such please do tell. matter of fact why don't you give me a call when you get a chance. I would love to visit with ya a little bit.435-668-0161 or talk to your buddy festus, unlike this loyde guy or whoever, festus actually knows me and we're plannin on doin a little huntin together this winter.
Just cuz my opinion and yours are a big contrast don't mean I'm a bad guy. I don't know everything about hounds and huntin(far from it), but I catch quite a bit and I am proud of that as are you. so when a topic comes up I give my opinion and try to help best I know how. And when somebody rubs me the wrong way we lock horns and it ends up being a drama fest like this right here.
This is a perfect example of how a good topic gets highjacked and way off coarse, so I appologize to the guy that started this topic and mike next time you want to start drama pm me or give me a call, hell sakes you've got my number now.and tell this loyde guy to call me too I would love to meet him if he's gona talk about me and claim to know me.

Thanks for the input Hounden'em, and Mike, come on why would you post something like that? We all get on these forums to learn and communicate with our fellow hunters not to brag and talk bad about others. There's no prize for being the best houndsmen and no one here is impressed or in awe of you, you're just making yourself look like a jerk.

Re: Passing on a lion
Andy I have hunted the worst ledges and cliffs in southern ut. We have stopped a few lions in some bad spots, I have never had a dog killed by a lion but have had a few fall to thier deaths. My older dogs know what is going to happen and come to me when i get to the lion. You just have to chase down the young dogs the best you can. Most of the time you want to catch the dogs and tie them back wether you plan on shooting the lion or not just to be safe

Re: Passing on a lion
I've had to pull my dogs off a few on the ground and while I can't just whistle & walk away, I can usually holler a couple times & they'll come to me.
By the way the two best dogs I have (i'd say they're as broke as any) still wear a E collar with a toner just so I can BACK EM UP with the toner. Works every time & they'll still stay treed solid til the next day. Wont be barkin like they've only been there an hour but they'll be barkin & they'll be there. Later, Jeff

Re: Passing on a lion
My question is what would a person from Indiana want to know about baying up lion in the desert? What do you all do with a bayed up raccoon or coyote? I'm really not clear on the motives of your question.

Ha! good question sourdough, I'm about to move back to Texas where I lived for some time and am planning on putting a set of cat dogs together. While I lived there before I had cow and hog dogs but I've always liked hounds and I'm just trying to compile as much info as possible.

Re: Passing on a lion
Any game I have caught on the ground I just pull the dogs off. The technique you need to use depends on your dogs. I can usually call the dogs off but you get the one that won't listen, grab the most aggressive dog and the rest will usually follow. Lions don't want to wrestle with you any more than you want to wrestle with them. It isn't that big of a deal, don't worry about it.

Re: Passing on a lion
I think Mike is just callin it like some of see it. Atleast the way I see it. And not just this thread. I can call some of my dogs off, usually females. Most of my males are to pig headed to listen. I used to hunt with a guy who shock his dogs or tone them off a bayed up bear and I thought he was nuts! But he'd hunt the same dogs day after day on bear. I'd never do it but I think alot of peolpe don't relize that hounds can actually used there heads once in awhile. I can walk my dogs away from a tree without a leash and without killing the game, no problem.

How does Mr. Mike i know every thing and every one and you call it like you you see it,when all your callin is what your readin on a computer. The guy constantly throws his number on here and offers any body to come hunt with him, has tons of pics of his dogs on game.I ain't try'in kiss ass either I guess just callin it like I see it,which is based off what I read and see on here.Unless I went to Utah and seen that he was in over his head, I wouldn't post shit that I heard from somebody.Maybe PM. don't want to piss off lenard either for he is well known and loved on here but didn't get his last post or JR's may be I need to smoke a little more

Andy,
If I were in your shoes, and catching lions in Texas, I wouldn't worry too much about pulling the dogs off. The folks over there just keep smokin 'em, and the lions just keep reproducing. Lions in Texas are spreading out into areas that they have never been before, so I don't believe that there will be a problem with wiping out the population if you were to treat them like varmints just like everyone else there does. Have fun!!
