I started shooting it a couple of years ago. Prior to that I wanted a 17hmr but the 22mag shooting the v-max is in a different league all together.
17hmr shooting a vmax, the velocity is 2550, that is 350fps difference. it is a smaller bullet, the 17hmr is shooting a 17gr bullet, but at 2550fps it is purely devasating on small game. only draw back i see with the 17 is the lighter bullet is more suseptable to wind drift when shooting in windy conditions. i have both, a 17hmr and a 22 mag. i like them both, but for the price of ammo i prefer to shoot my 223's. if you handload, you can shoot it just as cheap and it is a lot better at everything. the 223, shooting a 40gr. vmax is shooting 3800fps. the 22 mags go for about $11-$12 a box for 50. i can get 22 cal 40gr. vmax bullets for $14 for 100 or $38 for 250, a pound of powder for little over $20, which you get many, many rounds out of a pound of powder. if you already have the brass you can actually load and shoot the 223 cheaper than shooting either the 17 or 22mags.
