out east, a lot of bird dog people think bells help keep our great big coyotes away. Some people use bells on coondogs at night thinking it will keep coyotes at a distance, although I find light collars work better at night.

I keep bells on the door of my garbsage shed to discourage bears going in. It doesn't do much good, but is enough to wake the dogs at night if a bear tugs on the door, and that does do some good!

I just recently put a bell on my pup because he's getting more and more independent and it's nice to be able to hear he's around even when the visibility in the brush is crap. Until I get my tracking collar I don't like to let him get too far away.
