can a good hunting dog make a good house dog?

I was just wondering how many people let their hounds in the house? And if it helps or henders their performances. I have two differen't thoughts about it. one it would help because you get a better bond with the dog so once it learns what you need out of it, it is going to what ever to impress you. On the other side it could hender them making them lazy or most important wont let them get used to the cold weather if they are kept in. Or maybe how many guys/gals want their hounds in side but the spouse says "HELL NO"!!!

It won't hurt their hunting one bit but you are right about the cold weather.

I'd tell you, hell ya on letting the dogs inside. My other half, probably not so much. I havn't raised many, but the house dogs seem to have a much better handle and they really strive to please. The two pups I have now are not and have not been inside puppies at all. They have plenty of desire to catch game, but their handle makes it much more difficult to get them to focus on what pleases me. Just my two bits.

I am talking about raising them as puppies in the house till they are 6 months or so and then when they get older, they live outside with an occasional trip inside.

I've never done it but a buddy of mine has to B&T coondogs that live in the house 24/7 and are totally spoiled and they hunt great. They'll hunt all night and are gritty as can be. Pretty cool..

I've brought a few in the house when they are injured and such. they were stock house broke and I probably would have kept em in after they healed but my wife hates dogs. I feel like the more human interaction a dog gets the more it exposes the size of their brain. I think they do need to be outside to stay tuff and conditioned for the huntin.

I had one recently that was pretty beat up and was pissing blood so I had him inside a kennel in the house where he'd be warm the first night and hopefully be more comfortable... then after whining for 2 hours in the kennel and driving me nuts he was upstairs on the couch, which he adapted to quite easily.
Then I said we'll see what he does when we go to bed as he had hopped off when we did and I called him over to the stairs to throw in his kennel and he ran right back up on the couch and curled up...

2 minutes in bed after being told no 5 times cuz the dog would come investigate, sure enough he nosed open the door and crawled up on the bed.
Quick boot to the butt and he settled on the end of the bed... til he decided he wanted under the covers and started rooting like a badger at the duvet.
Enough of that, I got up grabbed him by the collar and the smart ass s.o.b played dead and let his legs go limp as I dragged him across the whole bed and off the side before his legs started working again
Hounds in the house.... never again!

All my kennels are simple 3/4" plywoood boxes sprayed with linex-like material, basically cubes 26"Hx26"Wx32"L with K9 condo doors and pine shavings for bedding, they stay pretty warm in there.

Every hound I have ever owned has spent it's early puppyhood in the house. But a few were lucky enoungh to spend their lives as inside dogs. A couple also rode in truck with me everywhere I went. During the day I put them outside to let them grow their fur for winter and also to deal with the heat in summer, and then since I have mostly owned females when in heat they were out 24/7. Never hurt their hunting abiity one bit, in fact I think it helped with trash breaking because they knew when I said no I ment it. Also made handling great I very rarly use a lead I will get to a tree love em up take a pic maybe and say lets go and turn and head for truck or deeper into woods and they are right there ready for whatever comes next.

the only issue I have with working or hunting dogs in the house is I always have to damn many for all of us to fit into the house together and since I pay the bills and buy the dog food I get priority. it's just another pile of voodoo about hounds if he is going to make it he will do it livin in the house or the yard. the advantage is of course he will usually handle better givin more interaction. if you only have a couple and hunt on weekends you maybe ahead by keeping them in the house.

both my hounds are inside most the time and know when they go out at nite its time to hunt. my female will whine at the door all nite til i get home from work to go hunting. she gets pissed so to say if i dnt take her. but yeah she shakes when its cold in the back of the truck but she runs off the cold in a matter of minutes. and i got two that stay out in 15x10 cages and they aint no better hunters then the inside dogs.

One of the best hounds I had was totally house broke. She only stayed in the house about 20% of the time, but that was usally becouse she was to dirty to let in after a night of hunting. My wife had a basset hound that had to be watched all of the time or she would tear into everything, but you could set a steak on the table and leave my walker dog the house all day with it and she would never touch it.

two of my hounds are house dogs, but all of my hounds get there chance to spend time inside from time to time. it doesnt seem to make a difference in there hunting ability to me. they are house dogs when they are inside but when they see the truck with the box in the back they forget the house, they are all about the hunt. JMO.

As long as they stay away from the skunks, that was the end of it with my jagds. Another problem I had was ticks. My jagd would sleep on my daughters bed and we had to pick a couple of ticks off of her. I let my airedale in the house in the summer when he is shaved and he loves it. He sits down in the basement all day where its cool, but in the winter with his shaggy coat on he won't stay put in the house. He gets to hot and constantly goes to the door to go out.

Not that big of a deal. My hounds come and go in and out of the dog door as they please.

Sometimes during the day I will keep them outside only. This gets them use to the warm weather and the cold.

It's a lil easier for me since at the most I only have 2 dogs at a time.

My two hounds are indoor dogs. My neighbours who are non-dog owners have all had their homes broken into while away at work, etc. I never have been broken into...........two hounds and an airedale, go figure . No sane thief would try entering with the roar of an intruder-alert going on inside.

Mine still hunt as hard as my bud`s dogs that have never been indoors.


Not having kids, we have always had at least one indoor dog. Having three indoors is about the limit though....not enough room on the couch for all as it is .

My mutts are as much pets as they are for hunting. Prolly not the norm as with most others on this site, but hey, I enjoy the mutts 24-7, taking them hiking and biking, and that`s what floats my boat.

Indoor, outdoor? Tryin the indoor at night and the outdoor during the day. with a trip through the riverbottoms each nigh or morning, so far this dog seems like he is on it, but never owned a hound so i get excited easy when he does little things that a lot of you guys are talking about with your dogs. Oh house broke for the most part at 2 1/2 months
