Sorry to hear about that. It seems like those good ones are the ones that get hurt first. Hopefully he gets better soon and you guys can get back in the woods.

Re: Had to get something off my chest
I started hunting with dogs at about the age you are now. I know the heart break of losing a good dog. Dad always told me "you can't lose em if you don't have em". Don't be discouraged over the loss of a good dog because at some point, you will own another one if you keep hunting hard. I understand you are disapointed, but keep your head up, stick your chest out, and find another dog to carry if this one doesn't get well. Part of this game is overcoming the loss of a good dog. The thing that seperates good dog men from average ones is the number of years that they catch game. Anyone can do it with a superstar dog. Are you willing to put the time in with another one? (I bet you are) Dogs come and go, the game has been going on for generations. Good Hunting!

Coady is right.
I don't want to water down your experience or loss in any way. To own a dog of that caliber, no matter how old you are, is a blessing! Always remember that no matter the outcome for your dog, he was doing what he was bred to do. I have had dogs die at an early age while they were in the kennel or on a chain. A few years ago my favorite dog of all time was mucked out by a semi. I still miss that dog. Just to know that I got to spend time with him and share in the hunt with him, those are memories that I will cherish for years to come. Keep hunting, and perhaps you will be blessed enough to hunt with another partner of his talent some time.

Hound hunting is a grand sport filled with excitement and heart ache whether it comes from the loss of a young prospect or old veteran. One thing I can say is don't fear this type of accident to the point you hold back your next prospect and don't compare every hound you have from now on to him because you will forever be disappointed and miss that opportunity of creating a great champion.

Sorry to here about your loss. I kinda whent through something like that last year, i got deployment order's to Iraq befor i left sold all my dog's but one, he was the best dog i have ever owned, he was a beautiful walker. The weekend befor i left i took him on one last bear hunt and he got killed buy a bear. In all my years running hounds never had a dog killed buy a bear befor, so now i have to start all over again with new dog's. my point is bad thing's happen's and alway's seem's like it happens to your best dog, but keep your head up keep hunting and another good dog will come your way, in your hart my never replace your first good dog, but good things happen to good people, you will get another one bud. again sorry to here about your loss.

Sorry to hear about your dog, Maybe itll get better. Were you at catoosa by any chance? Just wondered, I seen you were in crossville and I know there some bad bluffs around that place. Almost lost a pup up there last year on the hog hunt. He ran right off a bluff close to the devils breakfast table. Luckly after a hefty vet bill he made it and it dont even bother him today. Good luck friend!!

Sorry to hear of your loss..
You won't ever find one that will take his place.. But you will find another one to fill another spot..
I've lost 4 dogs in 10 years.. It is never easy.. I had to put down this summer the first pup I raised out of my dogs.. I raised him and trained him and was proud of what he turned into.. He had an infection in his heart that we just couldn't beat.. I cried like a baby in that vet's office, held him in my lap as we put him down..
I have his little brother in the kennel, who won't take Jack's place.. but it does make my heart feel better to have him there in his brother's old dog house and wearing his brother's old tracking collar..
You'll find one to to help soothe the empty spot...
