Having trouble getting a pup to come to me

Post by Eagle Nest »

I started with a bluetick pup last year and I got a fairly decent handle on her well I lost her so I'm starting from scratch. I bought a seven month old dog and she has been a chalenge for my patients. When you call her she comes to you on her time and some times it will be ten minutes before she will come to me. I've put her on a rope and she will listen while shes on that but the minute you turn her lose its like she has forgotten everything. I hate to use a shock collar but I'm not sur what other options I have. When you call her she will stop and look at you then turn and run off and go srew around its real frustrating. any advice would be helpfull.

Why would you hate to use a training collar on her? They don't have to be a hurtful thing, just a gentle reminder that you are in charge will cure her issues. I'd strap one on her in a red second. If a dog doesn't know what I want, I have a lot of patients. When a dog knows damn well what I want and then ignores it, my patients is gone.

Assumeing that the dog is not shy and is just ignoreing you the shock is your best bet.If you have a man shy dog then assumeing the dogs worth the effort the snack idea should help but remember not to give the snack every time just often enough that the dog thinks snack and comes.
Sounds like you just have a hard headed dog and thats why shocking collars were invented. But start easy and work up until the dogs doing what you want . Never overshock just because your pissed you can ruin a dog that way Hope this helps, Ernie

i have 2 4 month old pups and i started them with treats in a metal water bottle. when i shake it, it obviosly rattles. i only give them a treat about every 5th time. it seems to work great. not sure about a older dog but worth a try and its easy to haul with you.

Use the training collar! It works wonders. You don't have to get carried away with it but you will be suprised how quickly they learn with the right stimulation. My brother inlaw asked me to keep his dog at my house for awhile and take him hunting. I went last week and this dog frustrated the hell out me! No handle at all just running wild! Wouldn't come to me or even act like he knew I existed. Well a couple of hours with a long line and a training collar and now he handles just about as well as any of my other dogs. Believe me those training collars work and it only takes one or two light shocks for most dogs.

do u teach the dog to sit lay down and roll over too? sounds like your trying to be friends with him instead of hunting him. go road the dog till it gets a good work out. it will come to you then. dont worry about the dog not coming to you though thats not his job. its job is to catch game.get too many things in its head its gonna be messed up forever.
