ANY HUNTER THAT PUTS HIS TIME IN HAS A GOOD IDEA WHERE THE LYONS ARE, WHAT THE DEER AND ELK POPULATIONS ARE LIKE. AFTER FOLLOWING CAT TRACKS FOR MILES AND MILES EVEN A NOVICE HUNTER WILL HAVE A DEGREE ON LYONS AND THEIR HABBITS.

I LOOK AT A COLLEGE DEGREE AS A PRERECQUISIT FOR A GOOD PAYING JOB. BUT IF I WAS GOING TO HIRE SOMEBODY TO BUILD ME A HOUSE I WOULD HIRE SOMEONE THAT HAS BEEN DOING IT SUCCESSFULLY FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS INSTEAD OF SOMEBODY THAT HAS BEEN READING ABOUT IT FOR FOUR YEARS.

THEIR IS NO EXPERIENCE LIKE FIRST HAND.

So back to the topic at hand.......we have had several multi cougar days. Sometimes its a family unit sometimes its different cougars several miles apart. Going back to the day you originally mentioned we had 3 juvies walking around a ridgetop and it was not till our drive out of the canyon we found the lone tom track.

Right now with the snow soo deep the deer are yarding up earlier then normal and therefor our cougars are starting to concentrate to those areas. High number of wolves have also been keeping the cougars on the move and where we find cougars today they are gone tomorrow.

We have come across two different family units within the same deer yard. I believe from what I have seen is that females will share and over lap within reason but keeping there distance from one another. Toms will but only till they encounter one another.

As for home ranges, I do not put much stock in that. I believe a Tom will stay within his home range as long as the pressure is low and the prey numbers are high. Some Toms are cruisers and go from Valley to valley and never look back, this is what I believe.

Lots of good stuff here, observed by guys on the ground with years of experience.

Don't bash the bios to much untill you understand the job they do and the rules they have to follow. I like most here am not a bio, but have worked on projects in the past and I'm presently working on a lion project now with them (using hounds).
They deal with best science, something that is very frustrating to someone like us that deals in what works ( common sense) and dosn't have to have it proven 2 or 3 times and thus carved in stone before we try it.

Once they get away from college, get knocked around by the real world a bit, they start making some ok choices in game management. The bad thing, making one good choice for one animal usally means another animal takes a hit.
The Bios that get good at it are artists in my book, they do a great job going by feel.
We just don't get to see all the things they have to weigh in coming up with the decision.

They are not perfect, but last time I looked in the mirror nether was that guy.

Now, the topic was about lions being territorial? Yup I think they are. Don't mean they won't change territory due to prey or what ever esle effects they way they have to make a livin. Just my 2 cent's.

As I said earlier: 20 different people = 20 different point of views. In this case I think both sides made good points and both sides are right in some way or another. Books and studies have their part and surely personal experiences in the field are most valuable.
