Dog/s needed

Post by tony123abc »

Hi all I am Tony, I was directed to this site by a friend to assist in finding a lurcher/staghound. I live in Elko, Nevada. I am looking for a hound to run jacks in tandem with my hawks. I fly game hawks at prey, and I need a dog that will survive Elko's cold winters, and some pretty thick sage. What I am looking for is a dog that will keep the jacks moving so that the birds will be able to get at them once they break the cover of the sage. If any of you in the Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, or Utah areas have some dogs please let me know. If you guys need to get rid of a couple who may not run well on coyotes, but will chase jacks, I really do have a warm and grassy farm for them to live out their lives on. Thanks a bunch, Tony

I have run stags and coldbloods on coyotes and jacks. They will run jacks for you but the problem is most stags are very gamey and without alot of training you will end up with expensive dog food. In addition, I think longdogs are going to push those jacks away from your birds at a pretty good clip. I would suggest you go watch some guys run longdogs first before you leap in as you might save yourself some problems. If you really want this type of dog then I would recommend getting a pup and spend the time associating your birds with the dog. Their are some guys on this board that you might be able to hook up with. You mighty want to think about a bird dog type that doesnt push as fast and not as gamey. Just my two cents
