I dont hunt bear but If I did I think it would be a good reason to get this. I was planning on getting one in 45-70 just to screw around, but it sure is pretty.

I like 30/30 to me 45/70 is a little bit big.
I don't know what a 308 ex. is but if it's like a reg. 308 I think it would be good.
My son has a 7mm/08 works great.
At least in this area.
I'd rather to have not ever been known.

no bears here,I guess they just got a small popualtion over by Taho but you cant run em yet. There is a decent amont of cats round here, I dont have that much trouble finding the tracks it is just the fact that when i do find them the dog isnt with me lol. if you thought Carlin was good lookin country, go about two miles off the highway anywhere, and you will see the real Nevada. everybody says that Nevada is a real horribe state with nothing in it, but they can kiss my Nevadan ass because I was born here and love the sh*t out of it. lots of good chukar huntin over by Clarin though. I tend to see alot of lion tracks when I am chukar huntin and I hunt alot by Carlin.

Jason Hornaday brings a group of guys out antelope and deer hunting every fall with us and they usually bring all the new toys out to play with. They brang a .308 marlin out and shot several deer and antelope with it and it seemed to be a great gun the shots were anywhere from 100 to 300 yards and it put game down with no problem.

45-70

I prefer the 45-70, its like an insurance policy. Even if you pull a bad shot its still a dead bear.

I use a 444in the marlin guide gun and it's one of the early models that are ported and it does a good job for me. Mike

I guess if its a bear on the ground I`d rather kill it in close with a 9mm semi auto pistole/ if is a bear up in the tree/ a 22 short ! right below an kind of behind the left ear

with a old German luger 9mm killed lot of bear on the klamath River with wad cutter ammo. like Jack said you can kill them with a 22 if you don't get him all riled up. when up a tree shoot under his chin in his neck and it will break it ever time, you can watch his head go up when that round hits his neck. I am not going run through the woods with a 9 lb rifle. lever action 30-30 would be bad enough.
