Thoughts of a Hound Thief....

You guys must live in a different world than I do. If a houndsman sees my dog , I'd rather they pick it up than some yuppy who's going to drive it 4 hours before making that phone call. I've never had a dog i didn't find but I did catch a non hound hunter trying to steal a dog but those damn tacking collars caught up with them. If I see a hound in the road, I'll pick it up everytime. I am 100% certain that more dogs are killed by cars than are stolen. The only time I WON'T pick up a dog in the road is if I know who's it is and I know they are close and I don't have a way of contacting them.

I had someone pick up my dogs, turn off the collars. We looked for three days and couldnt find them. We happened to run into a truck and what did we find my dogs half dead and couldnt walk. He is lucky he is not 6 ft under. so i agree HANG those bastards

I think its safe to say, we all have our own opinions regarding theiving of hounds. I don't mean someone trying to be a good citizen, I mean guys who deliberatley take dogs out of kennels, off chains, out of dog boxes, or even pick it up in the woods then boogy out of town with them. We all know it happens, and NOTHING makes it right.

If you think its bad here you guys should see the UK. It an everyday occurance over there. Dogs get taken right out of houses never mind kennels. I have to believe its are right to be armed that keeps the numbers down.

Still hearing of guys stealing hounds... Makes me sick. Might I offer a Suggestion boys and girls? Chip your dogs. $30 is a cheap cost to help deter thieves.

Honest question here.

How can getting a dog chipped keep them from being stolen?

Would'nt a very visible brand be a better detterent from being stolen in the first place?

I understand a chip is great after the fact and hopefully after the dog has been found and hopefully if there is a place near by that can read the chip.

Or am I missing something about a imbebed chip.Do they show gps location?

I'm not sure but I believe in Oregon stealing a dog is the same crime as stealing cattle. I was on a jury one time and we had to deal with rustlers and when the law was read and explained, I figured it would cover hunting dogs as well.

Majority of vets scan for chips now days as well as animal control. If you reported your dog lost or stolen it will show up in the system as soon as they scan it. It offers me atleast some piece of comfort. I had a lady up the road take my dogs right out of my yard last fall. Neighbor guy saw her but thought as comfortable as she seemed in my yard and getting my dogs that she belonged there. Long story short within an hour I notified my chip carrier, animal control, and 5 surrounding area vets. Luckily the womans husband had a brain and made her call me herself to come get my dogs. I was pissed to say the least, however, once I met the woman, her state of mind explained a lot.

While I totally agree that thieves are beyond scumbags , I think fake houndsmen are worse or just as bad. Nothing makes me want to puke more than watching a young bright eyed newbie purchase a hound or pup with dreams of getting it done when you know damn well the dog or pup has never been hunted or trained in anyway.

I always wonder what they had to do get the $$ to buy the dream from a total lying dirtbag. Yep I know its the buyers own fault for not trying the dog or seeing the parents in the woods, but I am always amazed at how easy it is to mislead people into thinking that you are all that and know what you have.

Simply put "don't touch ,what doesn't belong to you"
When you see ,The emotion and passion that people have towards their dogs and the sport. It would be hard to understand why people would risk such an activity as dog stealing
So if they get caught , no use sooking about the " justice" meeted out to those individuals as they would clearly understand the consequences if/when caught
I would have no sympathy whatsoever for anybody caught stealing a dog
