bobcat info

Post by Gary Gentry »

I was wondering what the ideal conditions for bobcat movement are temp, time of day what do you look for when looking for a track? Food sources, type of cover, I live in ne Montana it is farm land river bottoms and high planes. Took my year old male out last week found a track that was snowed and blown in he trailed it for a half hour and took it over 400 yards never opened but showed interest in it. I don't have a older dog to hunt him with so I am looking for any info that would help me put him on the best tracks possabl.

Look for lots of rabbit tracks or rock cliffs with pack rats excellent food source. I hunt three to four hrs after a storm usually. As terrian goes look for any type of drainage that will give a cat direction and chances for food. Always check around culverts or bridges man made or even just trees crossing a creek. Best places IMO are big canyons with a road in the bottom with some spur roads that will cut the rim so you can narrow down where the cat is and find the freshest spot to turn out.

Morning after a snow is generally the best as bobcats for the most part due thier hunting and moving in the dark but they have been known to move at just about any time during the day also. As your area is mostly flat country watch the wooded creeks and any sage brush or rocky areas and like unreal_tk said they will be where the food source is at and in your country I would believe because your area is heavy populated with game birds that would also be a great place to scout.. good luck hunting. thank you. yeah we have alot of birds over here that is why the spot I choose to take him is full of phesants. going to take in out today. but what about temp we have been down around 0 for the last few days wind chills of -30 at night. should I look for thick cover around a food source? will they ever just hole up and not move?

they will den up if you get a brutal snow storm but once it breaks they will be out lookin for food. They move in all types of temps warm to super cold, the colder it is the more they hunt need food to keep warm. hope this helps the best thing is keep pounding after them and before you know it you will be puttin one up. later, Andy
