The Icom 2200 is what most guys run around here, or the yesau, You can select your power, if your running garmins etc. I think around 150 bucks

they dont work quite like a scanner they come with 144.000 mhz thru 148.999 mhz and you DON'T wanna talk there. U need a licenese to talk on them. But they can be "clipped" which give you more channels and there is 4 free channels I don't know all of them but one is 154.600. but there you are only supposed to run 5 watts. most people dont run 5 watts but that is the law so u can run what you want really.

aesham.com, will get you anything you need. Or you can order from e bay also. The radio's are in the ham freq. which goes to 149, on the icom there is sites which shows you mars capability, which means a mod, and you can go to 174 freq. Most marine channels are around 156 to 157. Private channels either side of that. If thats to much for a beginner, you can order them off e bay, i believe the antenna farm,is the name, which will do the mod, or mars capability for you. The right way to do it, is get a license for a freq. Especially around population. Good luck
