Depends on what you are wanting to do. If you take a full trigg female and breed it to a male tree dog (or vice versa) your litter can come out all over the place. Some wont tree, some will, some will but it takes awhile. Some will show more tree dog traits but have the speed and agility of the trigg. This is what most hunters want. Generally when crossing a trigg into your tree dog you lose some treeing ability and cold trailing. Triggs run differant then tree dogs though. They will run heads up usually and drift a track rather than nose into it. They also bark less and in differant places then a tree dog. If you can get some that cold trail and tree you have an awsome dog. Frank Grimmet out of Oregon raises (or used to dont know if he still does) some pretty nice trigg cross dogs that are sure worth feeding.

This is what I know about "Triggs"

About 20 years ago, I was at a water race and this young man had a year old Trigg pup there.

He was working it on a caged coon, seem to really get after it pretty well.
Several folks was trying to steal the pup cheap. i told the young man that the pup was worth at least $500. He said he was offered $200.

I bought the young dog for $500. that day with no papers. I wanted a little more speed and leg length in my Walkers. I bred this dog to my best Walker bitch, I keep one each male and female out of this cross.

The female turned out to be my brood bitch for the nest 10 years. I crossed my wakers back to her several times, for 1/4 Trigg. i only bred for my own use, never sold a pup just destroyed all the litter after keeping two male pups out of each litter.

Of all the pups ever produced out of these crosses came with blazing speed .
But after a few years the size really went down, but not the heart and treeing ability.

This is a great cross if you want a field trial dog. Go For it.

Yes 1/4 trigg is seems to work good. You can go more but I wouldnt go more than 1/2. I bred a trigg to an English female. 4 pups survived. All 4 are hard tree dogs. Two will cold trail. One was lite on the tree untill it turned 2 then the treeing just clicked. If you are hunting areas with decent amount of animals, and arnt running 2 day old lion tracks trigg crosses in my opinion are the way to go.

Bear Hunter;
You are right on.
I only hunted bears, this was in Idaho.
it is legal to run off bait in this state, made for some hot races.

I have 8 dogs, 6 of them are trigg mix, and i am very happy with them, all have tremendous amount of speed, gamey, and tough. Most of them treed good from the start, couple of them are super tree dogs, 1 female was a little slow treeing, but now is one of my better ones. I bear hunt and cat hunt and they seem to do both well, on an older track they wont open as much, but still move the track and usually finish it, like i said i am very happy with them. I would rather have a dog that will bay the hell out of a bear, but maybe take a bit to tree good, than have a hard core tree dog that stays back 50 yards from a bear a lets the other dogs do the dirty work, then when it climbs run in and tree its guts out. i have culled dogs that do that.
