Brindle, come on up. I don't know you from Adam, but your welcome anytime. I'd love to see a plott run. I've only seen one, just a small sample group if you ask me.

Being the intelligent fella that I am, I dumped the dogs an a 2 day old track. Pups and all. Thank God everyone lived through it. We even managed to get her put up. The pups petered out about 2 or 3 miles before the tree and we walked them in. Their mother put on a show though. All's well that ends well.

Well Scott, ya did better than I did. Turned out on a bobcat track about 11, just as the sun came out and the snow started to melt. Dogs would give it heck down the north side of the ridge and would lose it on the south slopes where it was melting out... same old story. Apparently I dont learn quick cause I did that for a couple hours before rounding them up and heading home. Fun though, and all the dogs did as well as could be expected in the conditions.

better check into that a little deeper Brindle before you drive up, a out of state tag costs $300 even if you just want to chase. nonresidents cant get a hound handlers premit in MT and cant chase bobs either.

Well I went out yesterday and started a trailing along in this canyon bottom. Dogs went up over the mountain and down the other side and then headed north. I couldn’t get a signal on the Garmin or the beep beep. Looked at a map and noticed there was a road on the opposite side of the range from where I was and since the dogs were headed that way I decided to hike back to the truck. I was driving along with the beep box on the dash trying to pick up a signal when my Astro beep and said lost communication. Excellent that means I was close enough to get a gps position on my dogs. I climbed out of the truck and instantly could hear them still trailing in the bottom of this creek. According to the Astro they were 1.15 miles away. I started working my way into them figuring we had been on the back track since they had slowed down considerably. About 20 minutes later as I got closer I heard my male barking treed. Then I heard my female barking treed. I thought no way they finally caught that bugger. Well like most of the hunts it wasn't what I expected. As I got closer to the dogs I started seeing blood in the snow. They had trailed about 10 miles from where we started so I thought maybe a cut pad. When I crested the hill I was greeted by my male with a face full of quills. My female only had them in her nose but my male is a gritty bugger and he attempted to kill that dang porcupine. The porky was bleeding from its’ face and one of its legs was gone but he was still trying to hold his own. Of course the dogs got their shocking for running the trash. I am pretty sure that they were trailing along and then just bumped into that bugger and decided he would do for now. I was really happy with the vet in Shelby though. I thought for sure it was gonna cost a fortune since my male had quills in his tongue, mouth, gums, nose, cheeks, and head. The vet was real fair. Well hopefully next time will end with a bobcat or lion in a tree and not another porky on the ground.

Have you guys ever considered pulling the quills yourself? It's sure enough a lot of work, even requires help. Those huge vet bills put too much of a dent in the fuel tank for me. I just pull as many as I can get to, check every day for about a week, and pull the broken and hard to reach quills as they work thier way out. I always cut them with side cutters in order to release the stress on the quill. Sometimes you need to push one through instead of pulling it out.

Benny,

I started pulling them but had a bunch breaking off and I couldn't get the ones out of his mouth. I was by myself so I didn't have anyone to help hold him still. I was very lucky though cause the vet here was cheaper then a tank of diesel for my truck.

thanks

Benny, I was with Mt Hounder last summer when his dog killed that quill pig. His dog has some agression issues with game. Come to find out, an 80+ pound dog that really doesnt want you to hold him down can really wiggle a lot while you are trying to remove quills. Mt. Hounder is no little fella and he looked as though he was trying to cover a rank three year old stud colt on his first ride. I thought it was perty comical, however he didn't agree with me. I was told later that it took the vet about three or four hours and more than one coffee can to hold all the quills.

Ya ever see a naked porky before? kinda funny looking.

+1 on the ace, seen where a dog looked like it tried to hump the damn thing. had them all out in about an hour with help of ace. It's a good thing to have on hand.

My mule got a nose and bottom lip full last Monday. Three cc's of ace and the stripping chute at the rodeo grounds using a leatherman tool and she's back to pasture. I've used it on dogs also, they get to where they like it I guess because I've had the same dog grab one more than once. Like everytime I put him down, so he hunts only in Texas now where we have spineless porkies. Some people call them Armadilla's
