Get Real, just my 2-Cents

6 month old pups, on 5 coons in one night.
You got to be kidding me.

You got to get more in the common sense department. Why not save a coon so you can catch one coon a week for the pup`s training? This will give the pups more drive to find the coon.

It will make them better tree dogs by allowing them to tree for longer periods of time each week.

This is just to much for those pups in one night. You would be way better off, catching 1 coon maybe 2 at most (fast), so these pups will not bark or tree themselves out.

Hounds with great breeding behind them, get their enjoyment from finding a track and running it to tree, getting praised at the tree is all the pups need.

What this does is make for really strong tree dogs, because you have taught the dog that by finding and treeing until you get there. "This really makes you happy" and maybe sometime you shoot one out for them.

Always keep them guessing as to when they will get to chew on a dead coon. Dogs do not need all these coons shot out to them?

Unless it is far more in your interest to kill the game for profit or as some think, kill everything your dogs tree cause that is what you do.

Good Luck Training.

Maddoglures. I agree 100% with what you said. Prob would have worded it a little less harsh but you spoke the truth about killing everything. There can be a difference though. For example I just got access to a private ranch. The coon are so thick in there that we have to kill some of them or distemper is going to hit and hit hard. When that happens ALL the coon are gone. In thick coon populations its ok to kill more. NOT ALL but 1-2 everytime you hunt until you start seeing a slow down is good management. I have had the distemper come in and wipe out my spot before so I know from experience. If the coon are scarce like they are on most public spots DONT kill anything. There is no need to. If your dog is tree bred he will tree. The old saying that dogs need coons killed out to them or they wont tree just doesnt apply anymore with the sometimes to treehappy dogs we have out there.
To the original post glad your pups are doing. Be careful not to burn them out though. At that age it is like a 5 yr old boy. Everything seems bigger and tougher than it actually is. Good luck and keep hunting those pups (Just not as much :).

Bear Hunter;
Sounds like you have a paradise for the trainng. I agree 100% with you.
Keep your hunting grounds secret and managing the game will keep everyone happy.

I did not do this in my early years of starting out, as soon as everyone found out I had a great place to hunt coons. You would not believe all the calls i got from these new friends.

It took about a year for me to get all the feedback.

The land owner politely ask me to not bring all the friends. I said i only did it a couple times and he said they were there every night for the last month.

Oops, they were going back to my private land to hunt without me.
So much for new friends.

we only shot the ones the dogs actually caught and were fighting there is hardly any trees in the area the coons were in (and there is an abundance of coons we didnt let the dogs out on every coon we saw) as we were on the river in a boat and the bank is thick brush. we saw 15-20 coons in a short span and only hunted 3 hours. i thought it would be good for the dogs to get some short fairly easy races in to figure out what they are doing and looking for but apparently i was wrong

Mofo;
I thought my lesson to you was a little strong, but after reading where you were hunting .

Well let me only say,
Training young Pups on a river bank (wrong) Place to hunt young pups.
Coons can take to water in short order, if your pups dare go in the water after a coon? (Dead Pup)

Catch a coon in the briar patch with a young pup (wrong) Your pups will be so scared of the next coon, they dare not try to grab him on the ground.
he will just eat them up quick.

Here is what I would do to get the very most out of your pups.
First lesson of the week.
Lots of coons, trap one and take him to an area with lots of small trees only 10-15 feet high.

Let them see the coon in the cage.
Let the coon go right in front of pups.
If you will stay really close to the race turn pups loose.

Carry a stick (Mop Handle) with a big horseshoe attached to the end, this will help to pin the coons head down to the ground if he decides to fight on the ground.

This way you can pull the pups back and let the coon run again.
He will really want to get up a tree (Hopefully) You just don`t want your pups fighting on the ground with any size coon.

Killing the coon is not what you want to teach your pups.

Putting the coon in the tree is what you want to instill in the pups.
Hunt only 1 or 2 times a month doing same thing.

I hope this helps you have some very nice looking pups.
You want them to be doing the same thing each time out.
Find (Locate track)
Short track (small race) gets them hooked on scent tracking.
Tree till you get there. this treeing time can be increased each week.
Do not let a young pup fight a caged coon to much. treeing coon is the ultimate goal.

Good Luck

Mofo21. They are your dogs dont let us "experts" make you change your game plan. You are the one hunting your dogs and are the one that has to judge how they are progressing. You will find its an old argument on how early to start you pups. That being said I believe Maddoglures is still correct. Your pups are to young to be hunted very hard at all especially around water. Hunt them just dont over do it. An example. I LOVED rocky road icecream. Man I ate the heck out of it. Then one day I ate a whole half gallon. After that it just didnt taste as good as it did before. When training dogs that young it is my advice to not hunt them more than 2 days aweek to prevent burn out or worse yet a bad experience. I have ruined several young dogs by hunting them to young. They either burned out or a coon got hold of them and they would never get close to one again. Remember when you were little. Your backyard or woods seemed SO big but as you got older you realized you were only on a small piece of ground. With pups it is the same way. Experiences seem way bigger then they actually are. Again just giving you some advice. Wish I had had someone to direct me when I was just starting out. All I had was the local dog jockey selling me culls and telling me I had to just keep hunting them and they would turn out. Enjoy your pups and dont be afraid to ask advice. Take what works for you and discard the rest.

Mofo;
Keep up the training, sounds like you have got great handle on them nice Walker Pups.
I LIKE IT.

You really have a special place to hunt, keep it safe.

Sounds like Mofo has some really nice pups.
i sure like their color. "Walkers"

I to have tried to get my pups out on game as early as I can.
6 months old is just right to get them fired up. Just put the coon tracks where you want to catch game, besides it is nice to put a few coons in some area close to home.

thanks for the advise guys. before we went out hunting we put a coon in a roll cage let them bark at it for a few mins then leashed them up and let the coon go for 3-4 minutes before letting the pups go. they ran the coon down in no time and put the coon in the tree it was in a orchard so the trees are short. we let them tree for a few mins then leashed them up and knocked the coon out of the tree and let him run off again for a few mins then let the pups go again and they quickly found it and treeded it. this time we shot it and let them chew on it. after this i was getting ready to go home then a friend mentioned going out on the river and looking for some coons so we went out. the dogs never got a scratch on them and are not hurt at all and dont seem scared of them at all. hunting on the river in brush is just about the only place i will be hunting for coons but i dont want to ruin them for runnin cats in the woods. first post was a lil ruough but i do appreciate ur input

Mofo21;

Keep up the good training;
Don`t take my criticism to heart. I like what your doing.

When you have some great pups as you seem to have, there is no rush.

Age is what does the most good in young dogs. It is wintertime, no need to rush things.

This is the time to get them striking scent right out of the truck.
They will really get fired up. If you put them on the hood and drive by your coons track.

Call me if you need help.
