Question for "Beep Beep" users

How often do you guys that use the older telemetry style trackers actually use them during a hunt? Only when you lose the dogs? When they are out of hearing range? Every 10-15 minutes? Just curious.

I haven't used my telemetry system since I bought the Garmin, but like the other post I would only use it when I had lost dogs.

If I have one complaint about the Garmins, it's that everybody gets so focused on the damn receiver that they fail to appreciate the rest of the hunt going on around them. It has become more like a video game than a real hunt.

I dunno, put the damn box away and pay attention to where the real race is taking place.

I agree with you, and I'm just as guilty as the next guy. I fall prey to the Garmin screen occasionaly. I'm just wondering if the Garmin and the telemetry are even used for the same purpose. It's starting to feel as if "no" is the answer.

I will admit that I am guilty as others of looking at the garmin screen fairly often, but usually only when they have shut up for a second or if they are getting out of hearing range I look to see where they are headed and where I need to be going to keep close. I keep the Garmin around my neck on a lanyard mainly to keep the best signal possible. The best part of running dogs is learning each dogs voice and what that means. The excitement of hearing a young pup on their first race begin to open up, standing in silence with one ear cocked, straining to hear that echo to know what is going on, THAT is more exciting than any miniature computer screen can ever tell ya.

That being said I use an old ATS box for the beep beep. Pain in the ass to get it all out, unfold the yagi, hook it up, then decipher the bounce, etc. etc. I HATE unfolding the antennae, so I will drive around listening for them before I break down and get the system out of the truck.

I don't have a Garmin, and still have a Quick Track with Klein's collars.

My tracker stays in the truck most of the time. I try to keep up with the dogs, both on the 4 wheeler, and on foot.

A friend was down here recently with a Garmin. I must admit, it was pretty cool. But, I did notice, we were watching it just as much, if not more, then we were listening to the dogs, which, IMO, is what hound hunting is about.

I also am seeing people put more stories on here, on how they "watched the race on the Garmin" type stories.

Seems to me, the thrill of the chase is listening to it, not watching it on a computer screen.

Call me stubborn, but I won't be spending my money on a Garmin any time soon.

I have seen more bears cross the road and cross an opening for use of the garmin and been able to see more bears on the ground since getting the garmin . I only glance at the garmin or have my kids read out distances while driving by knowing the land and understanding the way the bears like to travel looking at where the dogs are gives me a really good guess at to where they are going to be and the garmin gives me a better pin point to concentrate on.

Don't get me wrong, I use the Garmin and use it probably more than I should. I do walk every track out on foot, but I'm generally checking the Garmin every few minutes to check in on what the dogs are doing. I was just seeing if the guys that use the telemetry stuff did the same thing. I think that listening to the dogs is way more enjoyable than looking at a screen.

One other thing that popped to mind.

How does the use of the Garmin effect entry into B&C, P&Y, etc?

I believe there is a statement on there regarding the use of electronics, and whether or not electronics were used to harvest the animal.

Just a thought - could we be pushing the envelope if we are using the Garmin to get ahead of the dogs, and try to enter that animal in the record books?

Great stuff Evertsen,thats what I've been sayin on here the whole time.This is and aways will be a listening sport. But we telemetery guys are guilty in away too.I ve heard many times on the radio"well the signal says there treed"I always lough tell I pee! i bet those guys are settin in the cab of there truck sayin that lol.Get out and put your ears on man.So to answer the ?, it should stay in the truck until there gone JMO.

We use the garmin here but just to see how far out they are and what road there by. But only use it so we no the quickest hike to the tree. We do have a wildlife blue box we use but that's only when we lose are dogs. You no its funny for us anyways we always have to use the beeb beeb on the same hounds almost everytime. I think its kinda funny. Gotta love them stubern hounds

How many people are trying to enter the record books ? Not many what I know personally that are real hounds-men give a shat about the books. Nor about the kill .
I know I just like seeing what the dogs are doing do I think I have caught a few bear that I might not have Nope but made the race a bit shorter. I and most I hunt with have no problem watching the bear and dogs crossing the road with out a thought of where is the gun.

I was simply asking the question. Does it or does it not affect entry?

I also feel that just because someone enters a mature animal in the record books, it doesn't make them less of a houndsman/woman. I believe that it actually shows how much of a person they are in choosing to only harvest mature animals - be it deer, elk, bear or cougar.

Apparently someone is entering the animals in the books, because there are a lot of animals in the books.
