Take them for walks in the woods and let them "train" themselves. Dont push em and dont go runnin em with a buncha shit eaters.
Re: How do you start pups out for Coyotes
If those dogs that run coyotes are valuable, I've got a kennel FULL of money out here! These high powered southwest dry ground lion dogs of mine have ALWAYS been good at running those little prarie wolves!
All I have to do to train them is keep them at the house for a while, letting them build up some inner tension, and WHAM, we're after a coyote.
Maybe you should just call them lion dogs...it workes for me!

Maybe you should call them lieing dogs then. Is it hard to find enough lions to keep your dogs straight or is the season short? Run a couple of bobs here in the winter but most of summer here is spent running bear and coyotes. I have a very large pack of coyote dogs so that is a year round job here.

when you say blueticks what do you mean? are they coon hounds or fox hounds?
Why i'am asking i would like to get into hunting coyotes with hounds. I don't know if you can use coon hound breeds.

A bluetick coonhound or any hound will chase after coyote and deer. The hard thing is taking them off of coyote and deer. If you know a place or seen coyote in a certain area, your pup when they are fast enough, will trail a coyote. It's easier to the bluetick to trail coyote and deer because coyote and deer gives off scent on the bottom of their feet. Their is a scent gland on the deer hooves and probably on the coyote too. But it is easier for the dog to trail coyote and deer because there are abundant of coyote and deer. It is much harder to train with bear and raccoon. But coyote are faster than the blueticks so if you're hunting them a shotgun with buckshot is best for a fast clean kill. The coyote will always circle around to the place where the dog first chased him. So stay where your dog first trail or follow the sound of your dog and and the coyote will come back around. Hopefully this help. It's from my experience. Good luck and God bless.

Coyote hunting sounds easier than breaking hounds off coyotes. Maybe I will give up, coons, hogs and bear, take my shotgun and just let them run a yote. I didn't know he would circle around to where they jumped him at.

thanks for all your return posts guys.... these 2 blueticks i picked up i think they will be good their personalities are great and they are already picking up scents from the games i play at the house... I have heard not to even mess with coyotes, they said it could ruin the dogs for hunting cats, true or not?

I run blueticks andthey do great. If you spend the time they will run whatever you want. I started my pups by putting them on fresh tracks and letting them figure it out. 1 or 2 old dogs to help train doesn't hurt either. A little patience goes a long ways. GOOD LUCK!

Re: How do you start pups out for Coyotes
i think that whole running them on yotes ruins them for cats thing sounds funny to me cause the best yote dog we own is a july hound and when she cuts a cat track first watch out she can put the heat on a cat any day and has even been known to show up some of those high dollar cat hounds
