Does anyone on here actually have hounds up there? I may be moving up there and I am pretty sure I'll have to sell my dogs. Maybe get some terriers for bears or something that won't go as far as the hounds. Any ideas?
Don't buy the hype.

I guide up there and I've never seen or heard of anyone having hounds. I know I wouldn't turn my dogs loose up there. No roads, very few quad trails, horrible underbrush everywhere and big hairy mean critters called grizzlies.

What does it take to get a guides license? Also, what do you think about the terriers? For black bear? If you had the opportunity to move there would you get out of hunting dogs completely?

It takes three years for a NR to get his guide license, much easier for a resident. Can't help with the terriers, never tried them. The only reason I don't live there now is because I couldn't run hounds.

Re: Alaska
Hi Bearkiller- I run hounds in Alaska. I have a real good time doing it. Right now I am running 3 Washburn bred walkers (all going back to Buford) and we catch 80% of what we start. The key is having intelligent hounds- by that I mean dogs that check in on a no-start freecast and come in if wolves come to the tree. Bring pleasure dogs, meat dogs, dogs that hunt with you or you'll have big trouble. I do things my way and have a blast- even running some for the state for telemetry projects.
