yotes
well i ran a coyote today with my grandfather and thought id share the story. first of all my grandfather is 80 and runs coyotes about 4 days a week. pretty good i would say. had about 10 of us out there today. great day for sure. 25 degrees no wind. we put the dogs on a track first thing. about 6 this morning. 3 walkers. they cold trailed for only about 15 minutes and jumped him. the race was on. about 2 hours after the dogs started it i heard 2 shots and thought for sure that yote was done for. the guy that shot came over the radio and said he only got some hair and a little blood with about a 65 yard shot. 12 guage 00 buck just didnt cut it at that point i guess. dogs were only about 1 minute behind it and driving him very well. needless to say that yote covered some miles in a hurry after that and left the chunk of woods we were in. so we all got around and posted up close to where they were and wouldnt ya know it they went back to where we started. haha as always we should of known that would happen. i went down to where we started the yote on that bait and waited. dogs ended up coming right at me and i thought i was ready looking over a nice open valley. dogs were driving hard so i figured that the yote was right in front of em. anyways i thougt i heard a crunch behind me. maybe a rabbit or a squirrel. but the thougt that maybe the yote was behind me came accross my mind as well. i turned my head to see the damn yote standing behind me about 10 yards. the problem was as soon as i turned my head he busted me and hit mach 1 speed. i fired 3 shots with my 12 guage and i hit him on the last shot. piled him right up in a ball and thought the hunt was over. but the god damn thing jumped up and alls i saw was snow flying behind him. at that same time the 3 hounds busted out screaming on his track. i couldnt believe it. blood all over the place and i thought for sure he was all done. the only thing i did was slow him up for the dogs at that point. we never got him because it was getting dark and we got the dogs out of the woods about an hour and half after that. all and all a great day of hunting and a yote with a bunch of lead in him. i enjoy every day coyote hunting with my grandfather. just wish i could of shot a little better apparently.

They are resiliant aren't they- frustrating. Sounds like some good dog work. Some of your hounds will get off the track after we shoot and we need to physically take them back to the track and get them back on it. Others will keep going on the track, continue running it or be waiting where it lays dead. Good story, thanks for sharing. Paul Conway.
