artificial insemination

Post by Andy »

Has anyone ever done any AI with hounds? I was wondering what the costs are like. Found a really nice stud I'm thinking I might like to breed a gyp to but he's a long way off and I was wondering if it would be cheaper to collect and ship cooled semen than it would be to drive very far. Also don't really have the time to be gone that long.

It depends on what kind of A.I. you are wanting to do. If you go with a Sugical A.I. it will be close to $400 and if you do a reg A.I. it will be close to $200. And that is not including shipping of the semen. These prices might be a little high, the vet I use is very expensive, but that will give you an Idea. Good luck

My suggestion is use a vet that has been doing the AI of dogs before successfully and you will be pleased with the out come just do your homework on the vet and you will be fine.

I just had a non hound female AI'd. Our vet charged 140 to pull from the male and inseminate the female. Very reasonable. She took and is due in 2 weeks.

On shipping the big thing is to make sure the collecting vet has the proper equipment to freeze and ship and have a your vet ready to inseminate upon receiving the over nighted semen.

I offer chilled and frozen semen off my stud and have chilled semen pups on my yard from a stud in MO. I recently had my stud collected to ship to a leopard hunter in South Africa. It is a great way to get a breeding completed without traveling when you have located a male that suits your needs. Go the chilled route. The male will be collected and the straws will be shipped overnight. Upon arrival they can administer the semen vaginally with a syringe and pipet. After they deposit it keep your females back legs elevated for at least 8 minutes. This method is cheaper. Frozen gets more expensive. It's more to collect due to the freezing costs and frozen semen can be administered vaginally but the preferred method is surgical implantation where the sperm pellets are placed in the fallopian tube. This increases price and risk as some dogs don't do well with being put under. Your vet has to be good also. You can determine when your female is ovulating through bloodwork or a smear test. THIS IS VITAL to the success of your breeding as the frozen or chilled semen does not last as long as semen deposited the natural way. My chilled semen litter cost me about $1,100. That was for two collections, the stud fee($300) and the vet visits to implant the semen. CrippleCreek Hound Haulers only charged me $200 bucks to haul a dog last time I used him. You might be able to get her shipped and back for only $400 to have it done naturally. Richard (417) 543-4649 Cripple Creek Hound Haulers. I hope that everything goes smoothly for you. If you go with the chilled I would get two collections from the stud 2-3 days apart to cover your bases. Hope that sheds a little light for you.- Lance
