I'm sure that they dont smell the same when traping you can use scents and go after only reds or only grays so they must not. But I'm not sure if your dog would tell or not.

Gray and red fox definitely smell different with red fox being the stronger smelling of the two. It has been suggested to us by old time lion hunter that gray fox are more cat like in their smell than canine -like. I know we have had problems in the past keeping various dogs from trailing grays.
We would be interested to hear others opinion on whether lion and bobcat smell different and how different. Can a dog easily tell the difference?

I've heard if it smells like fish eat it. Well, if it smells like cat chase it. Also, reds and greys usually live in different terrains. Although, they do coinhabit where these converge. When I trapped fox, I would sometimese catch both types in the same set.

Re: ? about fox
You might have to "Tap" them at first because the scent is differn't and even if they are coyote broke there is enough difference for a fox dog to run it. I am not saying all would do it but a highly competive foxdog ,I believe, would test the waters. I brought dogs from Arkansas that were flat broke on White tail deer and run our deer here in oregon it was not hard to correct them but it still happened.I hunt Trigg crosses and buddies I know they will flat check the waters and you know what I am glad they do for I want gameness in a dog for with Tri-Tronics nothing is impossible
Any-who- thats my thought on the subject
