Six lions killed in 2011 season

BLACK HILLS -- Two females and four male mountain lions were killed in the first two days of the New Year.
The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks reported six lions were killed by the evening of Jan. 2, the second day of the 2011 mountain lion season.
The first lion killed was a 3-4-year-old male shot in Custer County on Jan. 1. A second male, a 6-year-old, was also killed on Saturday in Custer County.
Two females and one male were killed Sunday in Pennington County. The male was estimated to be 3 years old. And the females were 3 and 5 to 6 years old respectively.
Also on Sunday a 7-year-old male was killed in Lawrence County.
No lions have been killed in Custer State Park yet.
The season will end in the Black Hills when 45 lions or 30 females are killed. In Custer State Park, five lions, both male and female may be shot.
Mountain lions shot during the hunting season must be submitted for inspection at the Rapid City office within 24 hours.
Hunters must wear blaze orange while hunting the big cats.
Hunters are also encouraged to check the status of the quota prior to leaving for the hunt.
