Redbones and bad teeth

Post by K&CCLOSE »

hey all i have a PR red and she broke a tooth at 1 year(a lower canine) and now i am wonduring if their is something that i should be doing to help her out for the rest of ther years. She gets her teeth brushed every month and is fed science diet and calcium/ multi tablets. i know that none of her pups have ahd this issue. Yet the walker we mix her with is just awsome. Yes he is mine also. Gretchen is 3 and half now does great. let me know if this is a red thing or?

Do you add water to their food?

When she was one I think I did. We currently do not and have not had any problems since. I think that she must have chomped on something she shouldn't have. I just remember seeing a few other reds with one missing.
Thanks

Yeah I dunno. This is the first time I've heard of Reds having teeth troubles. It very well could be. I know that if you give water in with the dogs food they'll be eating soggy dog food and that'll cling to their teeth and slowly make them rot away.

Like I said I am not sure if they had wet food at that time. Plus she was only about a year. I also brushed their teeth about once a week. Not we do it once a month.
All her teeth look good but that one that is broken off above the gum line. Our vet looks at it every year and it never gets infected. So lucky she hasn't had to have it removed. Also it doesn't afect he bite at all. Very odd I know!

That is strange. Glad to hear it isn't being much of a trouble.

Only thing I've heard about teeth, is with sight hounds. They lose their teeth early. I have a boxer that broke a canine off in the head of a steer. it's been about 2 years now and it hassn't given him any trouble. He needs knee surgery now so i am getting the tooth removed while he is under.
