question?

anybody have any training methods for breaking dogs from tree climbing? is there such thing? I'm sick of my two little black and white dogs thinkin that they are christmas tree decorations. nothing good can come from a dog climbin tree, so any input would be appreciated.

I had two dogs that that were tree climbers. One of em climbed all the way to the lion once and got beat up 30 feet above the ground, which cured him of climbing, the other never learned that way so I started juicing em with a little big of modern technology and that nipped the problem

Only had one dog that did it and that was back before I could afford a tritronics. If I had that problem now I think I would juice em till they came down and then pet them like crazy on the ground. Dont know if it would work or not but thats what I would do. Let us know what you do even if it dont work.

Ya THE TREE CLIMBERS, I have a little male walker dog that climbes trees. I took em on the river while back and heard him treed across the river well I could see the tree and started counting coon, I told my buddy theres one theres two theres three and even four WOW, NO THAT FOURTH ONE IS SHORTY the dog lol not good!!! I had to go up and cross the river and go back down to him repel the riverside, rope and climb 25 ft of the tree and lower him down lol.. He probably could have gotten down with out getting hurt but just had a vet visit and it wasnt good so i decided i better play it safe. Sorry to get off topic, But normally i would give em a little juice. Seems they have an easier time getting up then coming down lol. GOOD LUCK!

I have had some tree climbers as well one little bitch could climb a post. I would hit her with the e-collar it helped a little, but she knew when i was around would climb when i wasn't their I found her one time 40' up a tree once just about killed me and her both getting her down. I sold her because of this problem. I also had a dog that would climb he wasn't to handy at it. he fell from a tree and broke his neck dead as hell took me five days to find my collars. If I ever have one that climbs as bad as these two, I would try to fix them with the e-collars and some boots, if that didn't fix them i would get rid of them, the only thing worse than a tree climber is a dead tree climber. sell them to some who hunts the ledges....

Here's a suggestion that requires no training. Clip their nails as short as possible. That way they don't have that little extra grip that enables them to climb, do this to the dew claw also if they have them. It helps in some cases, the easy trees will still be a problem but it will keep them out of most.- Gerald

Looks like you hunt a lot of country with cedars by your pictures. Might not ever get them broke of climbing its just to easy for them with all of those low branches. I have had several bad climbers over the years. They will be in the tree when I get there then stay out while Im at the tree. Never tried the e-collar thing these guys mentioned, it just might work.

so far it has worked for my big bandit dog, but he is very submissive. it actually worked too good cuz he wouldn't come back to the tree. dora and hook came down, but I have a feeling if I left they'de be right in it again. hook goes in for surgery tomorrow to put her guts back where they belong from a fall. and Maybe dora the explora is just gona have to meet her fate in a tree. i'll keep trying it though and let you know.

I have this problem with a couple of my dogs. I treed a bear this fall in a tree with a V at the bottom of it. When I got there, my grade walker was stuck in the V having trouble breathing. I was at the tree in less than an hour but I'm not sure he would be in the back yard right now if it took me longer. I got him unstuck, and he climbed right back up. Shocked him when he did it a few times, and he stopped for a minute, forgot and climbed right back up. He got stuck again, I left him there for a bit, got him unstuck and this is a picture from about 10 seconds later. If you find something that works, let me know. I think this might just be one of those self-correcting behaviors in the form of darwin.

Houndnem I have the same problem with two of my females so if you figure it out let me know..... Seems like I have tried everything and nothing seems to work. In fact for a while they started my other dogs climbing. I fixed them by knocking them out a few times and a small amount of electroconvulsive therapy, but those two females I have given up on.
Two of the bobcats I tagged this year were casulties of these two tree climbers. One was a little guy that could have used a few more years before harvest....
