Twisted stomach
On Saturday morning after a long night of hunting i woke up an went an checked my dogs all out to make sure they all looked fine . when i saw my female was blowded up as large as a basketball in the stomach area. So i rushed her to the vet . sure enough a twisted stomach . i left the dog there to get surgrey, here stomach turned a complete 360 degrees . so they went in a fixed it . what they think caused this was her eating to fast which she does every time i feed her . so i am going to start feeding her in smaller portions an more times in the day . she is in recovery at the vet now . she will be home tomarrow . Im really bummed out cause hunting season starts on the 1st of december an she is my best dog . she will be out for 2 months . Im just happy that i keep a close i on my dogs every day . because she would be dead if i had not .
Re: Twisted stomach
how's she doing now?
do you think it was caused from eating too fast or some acrobatic moves during the hunt?
I ask cause there's another post with the same problem, kinda got my curiosity up.
Tom.

Re: Twisted stomach
Bloating is A LOT more common in hounds than you might think. Its best to feed your dogs in smaller portions , two to three times a day, depending on what your schedule permits. Sorry to hear you almost lost her as that IS a serious issue and could of easily caused you to wake up later in the morning with a dead dog. Glad to hear you caught it in time though. Keep us updated.

There are other contributing factors that can potentiate torsion. Google it, learn them well, and then adjust your dogs diet and make other appropriate changes to lower the chances of it happening again.

Re: Twisted stomach
I've learned to put the dogs in the kennel after a long hunt for about 1 hour and hydrate them first, and then feed them after that,if you feed first and then they drink the food swells causing them to blote, which leadsto twisted gut.

Re: Twisted stomach
Two smaller meals each day to replace the one large meal and perhaps one of those food bowls that has a *bump* in the bottom of it, so the dog has to eat around it, and thus slower.
Re: Twisted stomach
watch your dog closely i had that happen with my best hound last year i spent about 1400 on a surgery for him and he did good for about 3 weeks than one morning and he bloated again rushed him back in the vet they took the air back out of his stomach and an hour later he died. just because they fix the twisting doesnt mean they wont bloat, as matter of fact they will be more likely to bloat again. so watch your dog closley and feed her soft canned food try food with no filler's in the dog food that will help with the bloating.

Re: Twisted stomach
The problem is the dog is ingesting too much air. That causes the bloat. One thing I have noticed is that if the kibble is small, (like Purina small bites), my dogs suck in more air, and begin belching and coughing. They seem to eat slower when the pieces are larger. Mike
