Nuetered/Spayed dogs

Post by perk »

Not trying to start and argument, Im just curious; I notice alot of people on here seem to post for sale, or talk about cutting/spaying their dogs. Why do many people do this? Im just curious as it is something that is not normally done in the foxhound world I hunt in. Alot of times I wont know if a bitch has the ability to be worthy of me breeding to until she is 4 or so, I see spayed dogs for sale as 2 yr olds on here. Same with a male? Do you just not intend to breed this dog because of their stock or conformation, or dont raise pups, or dont wanna deal with putting a gyp up 3-6 weeks a year (depending on how many heat cycles she has). Im not saying its wrong, I just dont understand, and from my point of veiw seems a bit idiotic, (not trying to call anyone an idiot here, dont be offended)or premature in some cases when fixing a young dog. I just cant grasp the concept of possibly not getting pups off of a dog that could turn out to be that once in a lifetime hound. I know I will never use this practice, but just wanting to try to understand why others do. All thoughts/answers are welcome appreciated!

I can under stand this. I have been thinking about doing it my self. I have no reason to be raising hunting dogs. I am just getting started so by me being a "breeder" would just be retarded with the lack of knowledge. Just like everything just because you have the one hound a "one in a life time" dog doesn't mean it will reproduce that. You see this alot in top of the line Barrel horses some one wins the world a few times on a horse and then think if they can get a foal out of it they results will be the same, if it is a mare. Being a gelding they have gone as far as cloning and still cant get the same drive as the "original".
So Back to the topic, if I spay my females that allows me to hunt them with anyone at anytime. Or if I ever get a male I can fix on of the two and then hunt all my dogs. Just look at how many pups are for sale all the time I don't need to add to the mix. Now if the wolves keep moving around the USA houndsman wont be able to produce enough pups to keep people's kennels full. :!:

I understand this also for similar reasons as PRW, I am also new and hunt alone 99.9% of the time, so I doubt that I would know a once in a lifetime hound if it bit me in the arse, I wouldn't know if the dog was that good or just had a good day, I have a long list of lines that I would like to try someday from guys & gals that have spent a lifetime developing or acquiring certain lines that interest me greatly, also If I consider the cost most of them incur and what type of people they have to deal with during the selling process I feel that alot of pups are a bargain for the prices they ask, no I'm not referring to the solid gold pups that go for stupidly big bucks, just decent pups from decent people, they aren't hard to find if you pay a little attention. so why should I start breeding possible train wreck litters when there are already good pups available all over the place? In short a guy like me has no business breeding dogs, besides all that who would buy the available pups unless some of us don't feel the need to breed? the way I see it is that I can try a little piece of candy from the entire store, and maybe someday I will find that special mix for me, maybe it will be a pup from you!! never know, take care and good humping Ken ( I meant the dogs ) :joker

I neutered all my males except for this new Nance bred pup I got. I run all my dogs loose in a turn out pen during the day time. Helps stop the unwanted litters. The exception to this is my Nance pup. My plans for him are to cross him into a nice trigg female and see what happens. If I didnt have these plans he would be cut to. There are enough people out there raising litters from proven lines I could always get a pup when needed.
