Coccidia ( Coccidiocis ) in dogs

Post by bryanf250 »

Has any one ever heard of Coccidiocis (I think this is the correct spelling) in dogs and if so what is the symptoms. I have my kennels in an old chicken house. About 8 months ago one of my dogs started losing weight still eating and drinking good and acting good but lost so much I thought I might lose him so I tuck him to the vet. Got him on some antibiotics and he got better quick. I raised a litter of pups off of a female and she hadn't gained her weight back never thought a lot about it found her dead last night. MY BEST DOG. I have another female that is showing sines of losing weight too. Starting all of my dogs on penicillin and AlBond till I can find out somthing from my vet. A old man that has raised hounds for years thought it might be Coccidiocis I have never heard of it in dogs I new chickens get it. I was wondering if anyone had any ideals

Most of the time it is found in pups under 6 months old. When it is found in older dog they had to be unhealthy to get it. one sign is bloody stool (diarrhea)

Jeff hit the nail on the head. Old dogs that are healthy are not susceptible to it. Young pups will die from it if its bad enough. Albon for about 5 days though and its whipped. You will see the difference in 3 days easy though. The vets recomend 10 day but thats costly and in my opinion very unecessary.

glad it aint that. had it take out a litter of 8 puppies in 12 hours before. its a spore born virus derived from puppies stepping in poop and then in the water bowl. never had a old dog get it but from what i seen it do to my puppies it is a horrible death.
