i will for sure. i don't really lay hands on one too awful much. i like electricity better but understand not to abuse the button. he'll have a great chance her considering all my other dogs are well on their way or finished and he is the only pup i have to work on.

The black and tan in them is from the old wagner line. Mr Shockley crossed a full Nance female with a wagner bred male, and then line bred from there.

For the most part these dogs are mucho tough, have a good nose with the natural ability and brains to use it.

thanks festus, i believe i will really enjoy hunting him. never dealt with wagner or nance either one. so he has pretty much just bred b@t walker crosses for a lengthy period of time.

Yes, for the most part they are just line bred from that original cross. Benny G is right on with his advice as well. Get ahold of Mike L here on the forum he is pretty darn familiar with these high tans, and can tell you about them as well.

ok i will surely do that. hope he doesn't mind being nagged bout a dog. i like i have said before i feel i can get the most out of a dog if i know what to expect from the cross and what the breeder was breeding for.

One more thing to keep in mind. If your dog came from Allen, there is a very good chance he has some mathis blood in him as well.
Allen bred some mathis blood into these high tans, and has had some pretty good luck with them on bear. Allen is definately a hard core bear hunter.

i don't know what mathes is either. i strictly bear hunt. gave up bobs and coons cause i wanted to spend more time with my son and am gone enough during bear season. i honestly believe he'll be just what i'm looking for in an addition to my pack. what is mathes by the way? sorry i'm not very hound educated outside out of the south eastern unitrd states.

The late Steve Mathes was a long time state lion hunter for the state of California hired by the department of fish and game to clean up deer ranges of lions and then went on to become a lion hunter for Animal Damage Control a arm of the US government Known now as Wildlife Services. Steve bred a strain of hound for big game from a number of old strain lion hounds and brought hounds into his program from some of the best lion hunter around the country. Although the Mathes hound is still around Steve is probably rolling over in his grave as to how others have bred them and have made money off his fine name. There are not many that have the reputation that Steve built for himself. He is also know for his book "Brave" a real life account of his life as a lion hunter.

Not when crossbreeding dogs. But with this strain of dogs, that speckeled foot could backup the Mathes infusion. Without someone throwing something else into the mix, these dogs should all end up being high tans.

I read that Steve Mathes was from CA. Is there still quite a bit of his blood line in N.Cal? The reason I'm asking is, I bought a High Tan female from a guy in N.Cal that runs bear. He said she was 7/8 Plott and 1/8 walker. He had the Plott female(mother of the pup) and the male walker belonged to someone else. She was the only pup that was high tan, the rest of the litter were all black or black brindle. He said he wasn't 100% sure of the males breeding, just going off what the guy told him.

first update on sumo. my good friend and his son took him coon hunting for his first time tonight. found a red hot one and turned him with an older dog and a well started blue female and he went right with them and bout half way through started opening and ran it in a hole and was absolutly screaming and trying to dig it out. yesterday showed him a dead coon and was relentless on it.
my good friend has him til saturday due to the fact that i bought him on a chance without seeing him but by a picture and the info i recieved from ya'll and my good friends opinion of the dog. my good friend grab him up for me before anyone grabbed him until i have a day off from work to get him saturday.

next question is it a common practice have young males fixed by breeders out west. sumo is not intact. he is 14 months old and cut. is that a protection to others breedeing a line or to prevent him from chasing female wolves or coyotes in heat or can anyone explain?
