Re: CAMERONS?
I'd say Del has the best, worst, and only "true" Camerons. If he did not breed it, it ain't Cameron. It may have Cameron blood, but that is not the same. JMO

Re: CAMERONS?
There are other people that have "strains" of Cameron blood which in itself is the same thing. Contrary to what people say. Some use his name for good and bad but if you know where to look you can find a good "strain" of Cameron blood like Steve Phipps right there in Oregon, or Jim Harrell in Montana. Also Jim Bundrick has some down in the South. There are other people but those first two I mentioned are gonna be as close as you can get to pure Camerons, their papers are all Cameron dogs just Del Cameron himself doesnt breed, raise and sell them so therefore to actually call them Cameron hounds is not 100% true. Make sure you get one from a well known breeder who has had a good name for himself, seen lots of people disgrace dog breeds of plotts, blueticks, walkers, etc. because some guy doesnt have a clue to what he is doing and is just raising and selling pups and putting someones name on it like Del Camerons and getting $500-$1000 a pup! So just becareful.

Re: CAMERONS?
Is it worth it to go del or are steves dogs as good? I live in oregon so steve is way closer but i want the best and if its worth ill pay for it. Where would be the best place to go?
Re: CAMERONS?
Can't tell you from personnel experience but I have been talking to a couple different guys that got dogs from Steve and they were plenty satisfied with them. Both told me they are going to be getting more from him.
Re: CAMERONS?
I'd second what 12-gauge said.
Lots of folks have descendants of Del's hounds, but he's the only one who should be able to put his name on a critter.
If you want the genes they are available from several sources at fair prices. He was a very famous breeder because of his book publishing, lots of folk out west have their offspring.
I've had two different hounds descended from Cameron lines that I really enjoyed. Both were something like 7/8th from Del's breeding. Both made me happy.

Re: CAMERONS?
FYI - Del told me that he was not pleased with people buying from him and then putting their name on his hounds. Therefore anything I bought from Del (and they were already named by him), have a Cameron prefix. Their offspring, which was bred by me has a Cameron LT prefix.
Buck- who else besides Del is getting $1000 for a Cameron pup?

Re: CAMERONS?
Pardon my ignorance, but does the LT stand for liontracker?
Re: CAMERONS?
So how many years has it been since Del actually hunted any of these dogs thaat he is breeding.
Re: CAMERONS?
Sdb,
Thats what i would like to know. I personally have only seen 1 cameron that i would like to have owned and shes a dang nice dog. The rest of the camerons i have seen kinda seemed retarded honestly. Gamey dogs but dumb as a rock and growly growly growly! Good luck but, I personally think you are buying a name and not a proven dog if you go that route.

Re: CAMERONS?
Del doesn't breed any dogs until they've been hunted hard. He can't hunt himself anymore, but he sends his dogs to be hunted. I'll let him tell you where and with whom if he chooses to do so. Del is a good man and his reputation as a houndsman and breeder was earned well before his book was written. I would call Del if you want a dog with his breeding and see what he has to say.

Re: CAMERONS?
Talk to Jim Harrell - he actually hunts the dogs he breeds and he is a darn good guy. I have hunted with Jims Camerons, and they are way better than anything I have seen come from Del.

Re: CAMERONS?
I believe that del has nak for breeding right traits. And can see what traits need to be crossed to make a great pup. I believe if we all hunted as hard as del has in the past all his pups would become exeptional hounds. Just my two cents
