"Coyote" (catching not chasing )what Breed or cross to use ?

Post by COOTER »

Well here goes guys if you could catch more yotes, dry ground or snow, what kind of dog would a man need? I've always been a Greyfox and Bobcat hunter but if I were to change varmints and wanted to catch instead of run the hounds down what type would we have to breed up. There are enough of smart houndmen out there so we should be able to come up with a breeding plan with the final results is a yote catching dog.I know the hog hunters have developed some big long legged crosses that can catch up with those speedy hogs therefore we should be able to come up with a cross that fits our needs. We would need enough nose to wind the track and run with heads up running dog style and speed on snow and dry ground so they would need height or legs and built like greyhound with lots of endurance to maintain the speed required to catch up and bear down on the yote and enough grit to take it to the ground or at least keep it bayed so a good mouth would be needed. So guys take it from here and lets share ideas no matter how off the wall just lay it out there and we look at everything..frank

Frank,
I know you may be looking for a race, but have you seen those guys with decoy dogs work? The decoy dog barks and calls the yote in and then agrivates him with territory threats to come right in to your gun. You just sit in a bush and wait for your dog to do the work while you watch. Amazing. I think it was a cur dog the one I watched.

Crogan or how ever it's spelled.......or coyote bred it what I call them!! they run to catch and will kill it when they get to it!!! alot of guys don't like them but it's because they can't run with them!!

like July's for yote hunting also seem like they are grittier and take more punishment than a walker

I ran a lot of croghan crosses that worked well to catch in the past but now I like to run running walkers. I dont have the dogs kill as many yotes but they catch their fair share and I think I am getting faster races. I dont believe the croghans are any meaner with the other dogs than any other breed, if they were they wouldnt be in my dog box.
I do know that they will kill a few more yotes than the other lines.

Just my opinion, I prefer females. They seem to be less stubborn. In a young dog I am looking at the feet, voice. How well is he handling a track. Does he quit if a yote stops. Will he work out a loss or give up.

I prefer females as well, I just think they run a track a bit better than the males. I also think males fight a little harder. I like my young dogs to run a track and be able to do it young and by themselves, they should be put on cold trails around a year old. I like the liquor/hale/croghan bred dogs myself but have several lines and breeds in the yard depending on what type of race I have going on. All the dogs i have are running dogs of some sort meanin trigg/july/walker. I do not want any flat footed dogs at all, all dogs and pups must stand high up on their toes. Also it is important to keep toenails short on all dogs and pups to keep their feet in as good as shape as they can be.Dogs get better traction with short toenails and the snow wont rip up the toes nearly as quick that way.

Your first question, If I was into putting yotes down in numbers i would be breeding up some hounds that were closed mouth, big and rough that didnt have to much endurance like a straight out running walker. That last part you might find a little wierd but the type of dog I'm talking about will spill its guts out to catch one and put his mouth on it if it dont happen onto the next and that aint gonna happen if he's barking on the trail. I my self like to listen a little barking lol. :D Also they better do it on dry ground snow or mars. Stunt

Males/Females- I'm trying to breed hounds that in low numbers {2-3}can handle a coyote, that by that kill one from start to finish with no spiking. Should be easy right? it isnt........ Male will handle the heavey work in general just from a six=ze standpoint imo, but I've had and seen females that were intence! In short it dont matter as they better be doing what they were bred for in style or they get fired. You heard it a millon times that dog food your scooping cost the same for the "ace" and the pos.
