Oklahoma Bobkitty

Post by powderhorn »

**We caught this cat in a live trap** It was a pretty quick chase after we cut em loose (Maybe 1/4-1/2 mile total).. He pulled a fast one on my Tana dog, we were on top of the hill watching the show and we spotted the cat working along the lakeshore where we were running him. Tana was fast approaching and he backtracked about 20yds towards the hounds and jumped into the lake behind some reeds. Tana ran past and was trying to work out the switch. As soon as she blew by, the cat headed back over his own tracks, stepping in and out of the water. My Ruger dog was further behind and winded him.. Struck and the cat made about 10 yards before Ruger caught him. He had no interest in treeing and Ruger is the kind of dog who isn't really satisfied without fur in his mouth, so the fight began. I didn't like the odds as far as anticipating a vet bill, so I stepped in and shot the cat with my pistol while he was latched on to Ruger's hind quarter. Ended well for Ruger with only a few little puncture wounds and a renewed hatred for cats... along with a pretty nice Oklahoma tom cat.

I thought I had included the 1st key part of this, but in my hurried post, I didn't quite clarify...

We caught this Tom in a live trap and cut him loose to work my young Ruger dog in a controlled situation.. It was a lot of fun, and good for the dogs as we're still working on getting this Southern bobcat hunting down. These cats are pretty thick here, and just like anywhere, tough to tree.. but I think the thick breyers and over abundant cover make them feel real safe when they can move through it so quick. Dealing with small property lines and tight, drier conditions makes good tracks fewer & futher between... so getting on a decent track that is in an area where we have enough room to run it is a challenge.. Either way, its a bit different from the Montana hunting I'm used to.. But I thought it was a story worth sharing.. I'll never forget that cat pitbulled on my blue dog's hind-end haha.. he had no plans to let go.
