What is the strangest Place you have seen Bears hibernate ?

Post by bob baldwin jr »

My son called me Friday night . about 3 years ago I had bought a used Backhoe when we were going to build the house . I recall him stating that he took it one day to build some bear dens . Never really paid much attention to it as I thought that might be a little on the GOOFY side . He had been out Coyote hunting with his buddy and they got a bug up their BUTTS to check the Dens in about a mile and 1/2 stretch he had dug out 9 holes about 3 ft high 3 ft wide and about 8 ft deep into a south facing hill . Turns out in the 9 holes they found 2 bears in the same hole he thinks it was a sow with a yearling . Sadly 1 hole contained 4 yotes . Suffice to say the 4 yotes are no longer with us . Not 100% sure if what he dug was legal or not ,but just thought it was interesting

I think its National Geographic has a picture maybe Main or New Jersey of a black bear sleeping in an Eagles nest. It was pretty neat. The nest was ontop of a telephone pole and the bear climbed it and went to sleep. Made national news.

bear Hunter ; That reminds me of a story a warden told me .Up around Ashland Maine ,Guys were chasing a bear with hounds . Apparently the bear crossed a road and decided to tree . The tree turned out to be a telephone pole . The bear climbed to the top and apparently touched the Hot set of wires ZAPPING himself to death . At first I thought it was a joke from the warden ,but later confirmed to be true.

Loggers near me cut a big oak tree with the shear he said he new it was rotted so he wanted to get it out of the area good cord wood. Tree hits the ground out cones a sleeping bear. Close call for the bear. Could you imagine being woken up like that.lol

my dad delivers heating oil for a living and found one under a part time valley resident's deck this winter while dragging the hose under the deck to fill the tank.

A friend of mine jumped on a pile of brush while winter rabbit hunting, and crashed thru, right on a sleeping bear, which woke up and took off one way, while he went the other. Another guy told me he climbed up on a stump, which started to shake, and a bear came flying out from under it.

I was hunting some years back and came across this big pile of leaves in the middle of no where. It looked like a huge pile people would get from their yard. I couldn't figure out who or what had made it. I went to poking around and the pile moved. I thought what the heck and took a step back. I then picked up a pretty good sized log and tossed it onto the pile. I was expecting a coyote or fox to come out. Imagine my surprise when a BIG ole boar bear exploded out of the pile. I'll never forget it because it was like seeing it in slow motion. The leaves shot everywhere and out came this huge black blob. As he was running away he turned and looked over his shoulder at what had woke him. I started to laugh after it all settled down. I thought to myself. I bet he looked over his shoulder and saw me and said to himself "you bashtard".

I can't verify it but, I was told by what I would consider a pretty honest guy that he found a bear hibernating in his old out house years ago. He said that the water froze in his house one night so that morning he went to the old out house to do his business and when he pulled the door open there was a bear laying between the door and the bench for the seat. He said that the bear had appearently got the door open with his paw and went in to do his business but desided to just take a nap and the spring just pulled the door shut behind him. Of course he always tells the story when we all go up to stay when we're hunting. He'll say "boys be careful if you have to go to the out house in the dark" and then laughs. I guess it's the truth cause I've not known him to lie.

A customer called and complained that his furnace was running non-stop but no heat in the house. I had to belly crawl to get under the house where the ductwork was and found all of the ductwork pulled down. Over in the corner was a pile of insulation and when my light hit it, a bear reared up and gazed into the light. Must of been 60 degrees under that house in the dead of winter. He was livin large. The bear was lying under a vent in the stem wall, so I figgered I would cut the wire mesh out and poke him with something to get him to leave. I fired up my sawzall and when I did the bear came out of there in 2 seconds flat. Almost ran over my son who was watching to see if he came out. Made for a break in the winter monotony anyway.
when in doubt turn em out

this isnt really hibernating but its cool non the less, up here when the beach trees are full of nuts and your way back in the woods you can see nests that the bears make in the tops of the beach trees, kinda looks like a rough eagles nest but big branches broken off, and the bear will spend a couple days in it just eating beach nuts and then move on to the next tree.
