on the box or on the hood

How do you guys prefer to rig your dogs and why. I put mine on the box but have thought about getting a hood mat so I can watch them.

i like to have dogs on the hood and on the box. its nice having an old dog on the front and a young dog thats" learning the ropes" on there with him. seem to get more strikes/game that crossed the road,when theres dogs on the hood. and some times dogs wind a track better of the box then the hood.

i just go to u-pull it, buy a hood for 50 bucks, get carpet, spay adhesive on the hood, and the carpet,fold the carpet under the hood about 2in, and pop rivet the carpet to the hood. spray that door foam stuff in the under side of the hood to stiffen it up, and put snaps on it. pretty cheap and easy to do.

I haul them both ways, in my experience the dogs strike better whichever way they are more used to being hauled. But I like to haul them on the hood where I can watch them, but I don't like dogs on the front of a fourwheeler, just hard to see around and if they have gas your just a little to close If your driving a toyota, or most newer trucks you need to brace/stiffen the hood up, I too use spray foam for that, and just glue and pop rivet carpet to the hood. I never bother to go buy a spare hood, because I figure by the time I get rid of a truck it is going to be so rough that a carpeted hood isn't going to lower the value any actually I owned several toyota's of the same body style and just kept the hood off the first one that got wrecked and put it on each truck after that. Have been going to glue carpet to the hood of my Tacoma but haven't got around to it yet because I just don't hunt out of a truck that much anymore (mostly either off a fourwheeler or snowmobile)

I had a friend once who had this big old jug headed bluetick he got from John Henniman. He called this dog Meat Ball, but meat head would have been a better name for him. He had this real clean little two tone F-150 Ford with that slant 6 they had back then and it was a great little hunting truck but old Meat Ball sure like to add his touch to it. He was rigging dogs off the hood with a mat and for some reason back then that seemed to be vogue and a lot of guys were doing it. Old Meat Head would get up there and everything would be ok for a bit but if them other dogs starting popping off a little like they were catching some bear scent coming up out of a canyon. LOOK OUT! That old butt hole would go to flexing and the next thing you new he was dropping monster logs and then kicking his back feet like a mad wolf and throwing that $hit all over the place. Good greif it was horrible!! thankfully Meat Ball never could make a race and finally earned a bullet but not before he gave many the gagging heaves.LOL!

Make sure your winshield wippers are in good shap and always keep resivor full spray It seems the more ampted up they get the more none loggy it will be.

When I was hunting Oregon as a kid, Cricket Payton let us use his famous Teddy dog to rig. We put up on the box and opened the rear slider so we could hear him good. Wasnt 5 minutes and he was peeing all over the back of our heads. Cricket laughed and said oh forgot to tell you about that habit boys. Good times.

I prefer the hood. I like watching them. You learn the dogs and their behavior so much better when you can watch them. Plus mine need watching. LMAO. Both my strike dogs are female, so I don't have the pissing and crapping issue as much. Last night one of the dogs shit on the windshield but I had given her some junk food yesterday morning, and this was her first time hunting since bear season closed, so she was nervou and all amped up... It wasn't pretty.

A good 20yrs ago I hunted with a guy that hooded his one strike dog.We would leave "Bear" camp at 3am at about 20 degees and he would put" Runt" on the hood and we got into the Truck that he ran (without) heat so he would not fall asleep. Now old Runt would promptly curl up on that warm mat and go to SLEEP !! My first time with the two of them I was pissed I'am freezing and our so called strike dog is fast asleep,but I soon found out that the nose never sleeps for in about 1 hour, when I am dozzing off, Runt shot straight up screaming and scared the holy $hit out of me.If you don't have too many the hooding is good...frank

Tim i have riged them dogs both ways bud if that scent has left the ground they wont miss it if they are good rig dogs i think the box is better because the front end of your truck stirs up the scent if the air preassure is heavy you wont hardly hit a track unless someone is in front of ya any ways i think they are a wast of money i have a mat for a toyota if your wanting one sure i can make ya a deal

I sure do like having that rig railing for extra safety, it only takes one time and you have a dog hurt or killed. Thats just my opinion.
