I am a pack light and be ready kind of guy. I live by a bic Lighter wrapped in duck tape. It will fix broken pack straps, boots or anything else you may need. It also makes good tinder. I keep a ziplock with some candy, half a dozen batts, a fire block, a knife, a couple REAL pain killers and a small compas. I also keep a bottle of drink, a head lamp, a few hot hands and a 5 foot hunk of rope.

In my mind withthis i can make it out of anything. I wont carry water pills=if im hurt or lost that bad ill take my chances i can find water.

A flare in my pack would just end up broke or wet.

I think my big fear is a broken leg or major injury. I just hope the pain killers would allow me to make it out. I think they are my #1.

Total less than 5lbs.

Good stuff. Just a couple small things to add. Those Foodsaver vaccum pack outfits are great for sealing several books of matches in plastic and they fit in a pocket without taking up much space. A couple cans of sardines provides a lot of nurishment. If you have a cup in your pack...a few bullion cubes (chicken or beef flavor) are easy to haul along, and easy to dissolve in melted snow. An oldtimer once told me even during wet weather if you come across a white birch tree just peel off some bark for fire tinder...the inner bark contain resin. Did that one time when a friend broke through river ice in below zero temperatures. Saved my friend a lot of discomfort.
