dog food

i was wandering if anyone gets the grease from resterants to put on there dogs food. what are the pros and cons from that.

I do that in the winter to help keep weight on the dogs, seems to help. One bad thing now, is all the gear heads are making there own fuel out of it so I have to get the grease from a mechanic now. I just get the thick stuff that they strain off.

This is a topic that makes me concerned. Had an old coot tell me he always added grease to his dog food during the winter months that he got from a resturant . He had given them some about the beginning of November 2 days latter 3 of his hounds got sick ,big case of the Shits a week latter 2 of them died . He speculated that the grease he gave them had turned RANCID . I did question my vet and she suggested to only use the grease from the house cooking that has been refrigerated .

This is a standing joke with the wife and I ,She claims the hounds eat healthier than I do but I do feed them the Good dog food and not the JUNK. She takes a Crisco can puts all the grease , trailings from the frying pan or roasting pan ,throws in left over gravy and meat scraps . keeps it refrigerated . about every 10 days I take the concoction out to the shop heat it on the coleman stove ,then mix it in with the dog food . Presently feeding 5 hounds .They certainly know when the good stuff is mixed in Not sure if it has any long term effects but I always take the hounds in for an annual check-up and No complaints from the Vet up to this point.

I do alot of big game hunting i have more elk deer and antelope in my freezer than i could eat in a years time... so when i run low on dog food my black an tan eats like a king. I usually give him the ground but he has gotten left over steaks and roasts on a occasion. I see alot of little black and tans, they look like poodles. mine is almsot 90 lbs and its all muscle, I hae a hard time out running him on the snow mobile. my father in law has always fed his dogs game too and his black an tans have always been large and healthy so i dunno if its bad for them or not but my dog sure loves it.

When I don't have any cat meat in the crockpot in the shop,I add canola or vegtable oil to their feed.I use hot water all thru season and any other time their hunted.I put the desired amount of scoops of feed in the bucket and turn the hot water on and run it till the water reaches level to the top of the feed,wait 5 minutes stir it till a gravy forms,then feed.
