Re: Need a bobcat Dog!
it seems like everyone is trying to sell me one for like 3500 and id have to drive out west for them they dont understand that here in mi the season is like only 3 months long so its not worth buying one for that much i finally picked one up for 250 just need to run with someone to make sure that he even will run a cat or find me one that is strictly running cat

Here in PA. the season is only three weeks long - but you can still run them for training any time. I can't afford to buy one either so I'm gonna train a few out myself.

a real cat dog in michigan is gonna cost you more than 3500,you might get a well started dog for that price, but a nice broke dog that is still in its prime will cost way more than that,if the dog can be turned loose on the track and finish it,day in and day out, then you have a cat dog.

I'm going to throw my two cents in on this one!!
First, and not being a smart ASS, GOOD LUCK ON THAT TRAINING ONE YOURSELF!!
And, not that your not smart enough or have the tallents, but how about money and time? Can you spend 3-5 days or nights per week hunting? How about that "start dog" for cats, you got one of them? Oh and don't forget that "check" element in your start dog! When, and it will happen, your started dog barks off (or runs off)on coyote, deer, fox, etc.---do you have a dog that comes back and "tattles" on the other dog so you can shut him off before he really gets screwed up?
And, don't forget the expense(like gas) of training(roading or rigging) that pack of cat dogs your going to train and develop!!
And lets not forget or overlook the "handle" it takes on that started dog. That is not cheap, even if you "do it yourself". Cat dogs need to "handle" better then birddogs or border collies on sheep or cattle!!
Not trying to discourage you or anyone----but training bobcat or lion dogs is not for most hunters. Simple fact!!!
Suggest you go hunting with cat hunters with good packs of dogs and just observe what they have to go through, just to maintain or train. Take your not pad and calculator along---that $3500 95% trained cat dog will start looking like a bargain real quick!
Oh and by the way, not sure if God ever made a 100% trained bobcat dog?
Hunted many years with lots of great houndmen and they have and had some great hounds---BUT--they are hounds and they do 'screw-up'!!!

Re: Need a bobcat Dog!
Chucktaylor,
Call Va Cat Hunter as his Hounds are the real deal! I hunted with him in Dec. in some miserable weather and his Hounds showed well. I also know of freinds of ours who have purchased Hounds fro him and they are pleased with the Hounds purchased,
Jim for the most part raises all his Hounds....his mentor was Mr. Lewis Jordan, who for 70 years was the foremost Bobcat Hunter on the East Coast.
Jims Hounds will handle the Best and be broke if he says they are (he does run Fox as well as Bobcat).
We will be pitting his Hounds against these Swamp Cats along about Wed.
Also Mr. Clyde is trying to give some good Advise.

Mr. Lawson,
You made a good post and offered sound advice for the young fellow trying his hand at cat hunting. As far as my post of trying to train a few out myself, I feel like I've got a few points in my favor to give it a go. I do own that "start dog" you mentioned to use with my pups. She is a 4 1/2 yr old female Plott who took to cats from the first track I dropped her on with no prior training on them at all. I got her for coyote hunting and have begun switching her over. She's not a superstar by any means, but I can drop her on a cold track that she'll take and grub it out till the cat is jumped. I can also free-cast her and being cat-minded, she'll look for a cat. She also has that great "handle" you mentioned. Her biggest fault may be her track speed - she's not slow but she's not fast either. She is the best I own and to me was worth breeding. The cross I made was carefully planned and I'm hoping for a little more leg and track speed in her pups. I kept three, two females and one male. They may not all make the grade but hopefully at least one will. They're almost 6 months old and their momma will be their trainer more than me. If the cross pans out as expected, they will surpass her by the time they're about two years old and then I may be on my way towards having a small pack. I don't run all year but do get out quite a bit and rarely have to go more than 5 miles from the house to get her on a track or at least in the woods where we have a good chance of starting a track. Having the money to buy a broke dog is certainly an option but I'm having alot of fun "making" one (or 2, or 3!). Best wishes and good hunting!

Re: Need a bobcat Dog!
Mr. Cas,
Sounds like you do have it going your way.
Good luck & I know you will have enjoyable time.
Be careful though, you will be like some of the rest of us and all you want to do is spend time in the woods with your hounds! If not there, then thinking and planning how to get there??
Again, good luck and enjoy,
Clyde

Re: Need a bobcat Dog!
Where in Va are you located? I am in WV and have a young blue tick I am working on with cats. I may be interested in purchasing a trained cat dog but also would like any information you can give on how to train a dog on cat from a pup. I mostly bear hunt and have just got interested in cat hunting as of late. Thanks!
