I dont know how manipulating your dogs protective instincts would affect him, I am new to this though so please tell me why its a bad idea. On the other topic of letting the coon fight the dog at such a early age I have heard from every houndsman that I know, that letting your dog see a coon too early is bad because it could be intimidated. and Definatly letting your dog get beat up while it is still young is even worse. When I do a turn loose with my 11 month old dog I send a older one with it shortly after i let my pup go just in case they catch it on the ground.

I have to agree with Montananative, if you depend on other dogs to train your dog you will end up with a pack dog. Timothy, if you encourage your dogs protective instincts and at the same time encourage aggression you may end up with a mean dog that doesn't know when to turn it on and off. THose possessive instincts can be trouble, in the box, kennel or at the tree or a kill. JMO. As for running small game and big game. I don't think it a problem at all. I consider my dogs to be all coon. We big game hunt about 10% of the time. My 7 month old pup is doing well. He has only seen coon. He is tracking great, opens on track and has a huge mouth but he hasn't done a whole lot at the tree. Until this morning. I dropped him on a nice sized lion track. He took right to it, opened and ran hard with my other two hounds that are 2.5 years old. I didn't see him again until I got to the tree. And he was treeing his ass off when I got there. You just never know when that dog will click. Just keep em in the woods and build on the positive.

I see how that could be a problem! Its refreshing to see advice on here with actual reasoning used as well. nice pictures btw. I think the one dog has a climbing problem though!

Your story didn't bother me. I could care less if a guy did a cage match with his dog and a coon. I wouldn't do it with my dog but I'd probably buy a ticket and watch someone elses . I just think its bad advise to give a guy considering the world we live in. 30 years ago was a much different world and I wouldn't wan't Slash to get into any trouble. Where at in Colorado are you livin Slash, I lived there for 25 years.

And cjohnson1178, those hounds of yours look pretty good on cat for being Walkers. The only thing that could help them look better would be if they were RedBones! !

Thanx guys, and good thing I didn't have any red or black dogs we might still be up there chasing deer. Just kiddin I think I had a little luck on my side yesterday, but I'll take luck any day.

Radar the pup is the one in the top 2 pictures. He is getting big, and I perfer the smaller walkers. But I'm happy so far with him.

And yes we do have a tree climbing problem. I need to get this female bred this fall, just in case the unthinkable happens.

My father in law had that problem with a dog so he started leashing the dog so he could start to climb but then the leash would catch and yank him down. seems to have worked pretty well for him.

thats works good for coon hunting because for the most part you can keep up with the dogs, but running lions it can be a couple hourse before you get to a tree

My buddy has a dog just like that. We ran her all summer on coon w/ my dogs and could never get her fired up. She's go n on a year and a half now and she's just start n to get into it. I think every dogs different she just needed time
