necking pups to old dogs
necking pups to old dogs
i am just wondering if anyone necks their pups to their older dogs and if so what are the pros and cons to doing it? ive heard of some old timers doing it and was just curious if it is a good way to get them started without having them run trash.

We have training collars today so avoid it, I have seen many dogs killed this way.

alot of the old timers I have talked too said that they necked the pups to the big dogs to slow the big dogs down and keep them from trashing while hunting dry ground on horse back. one con I can see right from the start is that they would get tangled in the brush and trees and get tired faster. I don't usually worry about my young dogs trashing, as long as the big dogs don't follow. most of the time they get tired of chasin trash and make their way to the tree with the big dogs. I would say if trash is the problem tritronics would get ya farther than necking. jmo.
"Houndn'Ems Blueticks" if it smells like a cat, they'll catch it.

I hunted with an old timer that neck his dogs. He would have one strike dog and the rest would be necked behind the horse. His dogs handled it good with any problems (the day i was there)
I tried it when I first got started and it was a freakn wreck!
Stick with e-collars much better solution

Never have done it with our hounds... used to help with foxhounds and that is how young dogs got trained. Of course that was in Ohio and in open country!!

I think this falls right along with the old timers claiming your dogs will chase deer if you feed them deer meat. At least feeding them deer meat won't kill them.

I would never recommend it. Like Mike, said we have training collars now. I know of an old timer who did this and it wound up not fairing well for the pup. If you care about your dog don't do it.

Re: necking pups to old dogs
csl,
I rememeber that.
You know I have a couple of sad necking stories but the worst might be a time down on Pueblo Creek in Arizona back in the late 90's. We had three strings of dogs and were hunting all different directions from our base camp. My good friend from Springerville had a super little walker lion dog that was fair on bear but just a little trashy when he was fresh. Well he grew up in the Lee Brothers shadows so theyere was a lot of necking back before they invented the shock collar. Well he necked this spotted dog to theis big jug headed black and tan I had and some of the other dogs were necked too.Well you guessed it not far out we get a hard strike on a fresh, fresh bruin and away they go like a herd of mules hit int he backside with packsaddles. What a wreck! I mean we had dogs hung up we had dogs with all the hair pulled off one side from dragging and this little walker dogs was kicking his last when I got to him. Here was a dog 25 years ago that was worth three grand and drug to death by a hammerhead. If you have ever seen a dog choked they will fight it a little then once they are down the go out and if you don't get them air quick they are done. Just don't do the necking thing to feel like Dale Lee in 1953 because they had to but that is one of the reasons old Dale and Green went to work and invented the original Tri-Tronic trainer.

Re: necking pups to old dogs
This is one reason I hate havin more than one collar on a hound.
Necking them together....Mike and Dean spell it out pretty well, I think they run more hounds training pups than most of us.
Take good advice when it's offered and be willing to learn from fellas that have attended the school of hard knocks....

Re: necking pups to old dogs
Yep, a good way to get a dog killed......and more often than not, it isn't the dumb pup you're trying to train that you leave up on the mountain.
Re: necking pups to old dogs
I read all the post and I got to say that I hitch alot of cow dogs together to train the pups but I only do this in a set of corrals with cattle broke to dogs so they give them some honor. It takes discipline on the trainers part and the older dog. Chasing these cats is not a controlled enviorment and there is no way to protect those dogs. I say learn to become a better trainer and avoid this
