Dogs out tonight

Post by sheimer »

I went out with my son and my wife's little brother today and we turned out on a fresh bobcat track about 8 this morning. My dogs took it straight up the side of the mountain. They went up the only chute in the side of the mountain that had a little creed running down it. Being winter time in the Rockies, it's not just steep, but icey. I'm not really sure how the dogs made it up it, but I wasn't willing to take my son up it. We came back out to drop off my son and it got too late by the time I rounded up my wife's other brother to go with me. It's not an area that I would go alone. I can hear them treeing, but couldn't make it to them by dark, let alone back to the truck. They are 1.2 miles away on the Garmin and 2100' above me.

Pray they are safe in the morning when I can walk into them.

Good luck scott, you did pick the best night to leave em out. I'm sure they will stay warm treeing all night. Better knock that bobber out for em for a job well done. Let us know how it goes in the morning.

Scott, man do I miss bobcat hunting in the mountains  We had one get into the ledges yesterday and holed him up. Also put up a nice lion and Bubbles was in on that race. Hope your dogs are ok.

Got two of them out today. One of them is still up there somewhere. They were treeing like they'd just caught it till we got close and it jumped around noon. They ran it all afternoon in quite possibly the worst country I've ever laid eyes on. I couldn't get them to quit the chase till around 5 this evening and then they just quit and I had to walk into them and walk them out. It was a damn long day. If the collar wouldn't have died on two of them I probably could have made this easier, but, it is what it is.

Probably not gonna turn out in that canyon ever again.

It is wolf area, but they are soo far above any game animal that the wolves would be in the area hunting I think that the last one will be left alone. He's not treeing or making any noise luckily, I am praying that the last hound will be OK.

Thanks,
Scott

Got the last one back tonight at 10:00. Glad to see him for sure. Thank you for the thoughts. He came back without his tracking collar. Don't know what happened to it but right now I could care less, I'm just glad to see the dog is OK and home.

glad to hear you got all your dogs back. 170 for a new collar is a whole lot cheaper than a new dog!!

Glad to hear that story ended well. Sounds like your dogs have some serious "stay put" treeing in them.

It seems as though they do. I'm not sure that it's a good thing now. They were on the tree for over 24 hours and I'm not sure if that's something to be proud of or embarrased by. I'm glad they will stick to a tree till I get there but there has got to be some reasonable time frame that they will understand it's time to come home. Does anyone have a solution for teaching them that 8 or 10 hours is enough?

Scott, run culls and you wont have a problem with them staying treed overnight. I thought everyone knew that....Rookies.....lol

When you get really smart you wont even turn the culls out to accidentally catch something. Photoshopping does wonders for your culls and there are plenty of idiots taking pics for you to use. Wont even have to waste gas or freeze to death.

Hang in there bud, you'll catch on one of these days.

Glad to hear you got them all back. Now get em sold and get some culls.

Take care, jason
I'm thankful for being dumb and slow, then i don't have to over think this stuff.

Best of wishes....
