Need alittle help!!!!!!!!

Post by southerboy »

I've been out of coon hunting for 6yrs now and the old guy I use to hunt with recently passed away and his kids asked me to take the dog he had because he told them before he died he wanted me to have her.So I did she's a 4yr old Black and Tan but she been stood up for about 18mths now I caught a coon in a trap and she fought the cage good so I turned it out and gave it about a 20min head start she got right on thr trail and worked it good but only barked 2 times I heard her Bawl 1 time about 200yds in the woods and then nothing so I started in the last direction I heard her and when she saw my light she bawled 1 more time but was rared up the tree looking up and had the coon so I shot it out to her and she was all over it.Now my question is how can I get her to barking on the trail and tree more?Bad thing is I will only have 1 day a week 2 at the most to hunt her with my work schedule that's why I got out of it 6yrs ago.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

how long did it take her to put it up? was she more vocal for her past owner? have you hunted her? if she is just naturally tight mouthed you may have to run a tracker on her or accept it as it is. the other choice is get a open mouth hound to run with her. i don't know how long you have had her but she may need time to settle in.

I don't have a clue how she hunted for her previous owner and neither does his kids who gave her to me because none of them hunt or care anything about it.And he hunted by hiself 95% of the time. And the coon went probably 300 or 400 yds before it climbed and it took her about 20min to the tree because from what I could see she worked the track straight to the tree. And I haven't took her just hunting or with another dog yet I've only had her for a week. And I don't have time to fool with anymore dogs besides her right now and if she don't make it I tried like I was asked to by his kids.

I'd have to guess she isn't a real experienced hound and could use some time in the woods to finish out. you don't seem to have much free time on your hands to fulfill his wishes yourself, so maybe the best way for you to do that is find a hunter who gets out too hunt often and have them hunt her or give her to them. maybe a younger hunter starting out that is responsible. hounds have their own trail style and there's no "training" method that changes it once it develops and settles into it.

That was kind of my thought already about finding her a home where she could get hunted like she needs to be from what I saw out of her the other night I believe she has the ability to get it done but like you said she just needs hunting and a lot of coons knocked out to her to be a finished dog.I just got off the phone with a friend of mine that hunts atleast 5 nights a week year round and he offered for me to pay the feed bill and he would take her and hunt her for awhile and see if she makes it or not so I'm probably going to take him up on it.Because I would like to keep her around because of where and how I got her.Maybe he can finish her and then her getting hunted only a night a week will be alright. Thanks for the input.
