I looked through the Cali hunting regs and they read like stereo intructions in spanish. My quetion is, What can a guy hunt with hounds in Cali?, What are the genral season dates?, And are there any weird laws like # of hounds, ect...
Trying to see if I can get down there this year to run bears but cannot figure out regs. Thank you

Re: questions on hunting seasons in Cali
Happydog, you can run fox, coon, bobcat and bear. You must purchase tags for bobcat and bear. Bear season opens with general deer season by zones. The dates vary by which zone you want to hunt. You can run one dog per valid bear tag until general deer season is over. Then you can run as many dogs as you wish. The zones close at different dates so you would find the area you would like to hunt. Then look up the general deer season for that area and see when it closes to determine how many dogs you could run. I hope this clear's it up some, I live here and it feels like you need to retain a lawyer to help with the regs

Re: questions on hunting seasons in Cali
You can also run hog, deer, coyote, cottontail, possum, and squirrel...pretty much everything but lion, elk, pronghorn, and bighorn.
There's a 3-dog/hunter limit on hogs and a 1-dog/hunter limit on deer.
There are certain portions of the state that are closed to hounds from 1-APR to the day preceding the start of the deer season.
Hounds are not allowed in an area where the archery deer or bear season is open.
GPS and treeing switches are not currently legal.
Dogs may be used to pursue but not take cat, coon, and fox year during the time of year that the harvest season is closed.

Not to threadjack the original post,
But does anyone know if their is anything in the works to overturn the GPS regulation. That does not make damn bit of sense to me.

I just wanted to add that during deer season you can only rig one dog per valid bear tag. Hunting partner almost got a ticket for having 2 dogs rigging, the F&G officer said that if a dog was on the box or on the hood that it was considered for that dog to be hunting. NOW HOW RETARDED IS THAT.

You think thats retared, I know a guy over in Goergetown that got a ticket from F&G because the guy he was hunting with had more then one dog per hunter out and he didn't do anything about it (both of them got tickets), the judge thru it out but he still had to go to court over it, F&G can write you a ticket for anything they want to and you have to go to court so you can prove your not guilty.

Re: questions on hunting seasons in Cali
I responce to outlaw13 saying you can not rig more than 1 dog during deer season, that is absolutly false. Just because some F & G officer tells you something it doesn't mean its true. I've been ticketed for this twice, once in Downieville and once in Goergetown and both where dropped by the D.A. before trial. It might cost you some money but if enough people stand up to F&G on this issue, MAYBE, they will stop writing boggus tickets for this. A dog chained to your truck is under your control, period. And a dog under your control is not able to pursue ANYTHING. Its my belief that there is a large portion of wardens that don't know shit about F&G laws, so just because they tell you its law doesn't mean it is. Nothing personal Outlaw13, just wanted to clarify. Oh, by the way, if this ever happens to anyone out there, don't look for CHC to back you up on this, they curtainly didn't back me or my hunting partner either time.

Re: questions on hunting seasons in Cali
To the rig dog deal, i have wardens tell me i could rig as many as i wanted but they had better not hit the ground, and also had them say if their on the rig they are being used for hunting it's a grey area depends if you wanna go through the hastle. But the way i see it is take your dog box out and have all of em chained up in the back of your truck then what can they say. You cant drive around with dogs in your truck? LAME ASS law!!!!!!
