Whats your guys opinions about a dog thats silent on a cold track until the jump?

Its a fine line for me. I like to listen to a race more then i really care to just catch a cat. I like dogs that open while cold trailing but, i dont like a super loose mouthed dog either. I personally would not like a dog that did not open until jumped because i love to hear that bawl carry throughout the hills. jmo

hounds bark on track for a reason. I don't get upset with a tight mouthed hound but a adult that is totally silent starts to loose value to me quick. I can see their use in a populated area with only small hunting areas available. can't say i would enjoy it all that much. I really love a true bawl mouth hound. I'm not a big tech junkie while hunting and try not to rely on the tracker anymore then necessary and hounds with big mouths help. a tight mouth dog is said to be better at surprising cats but I don't think it would matter in most areas i hunt as the cats aren't educated for the most part.

The dog hasnt been on a huge amount of cats. The dogs 3. But the dog hadnt been off a chain or had any human interaction until he was a little over a yr old. Once the cats jumped the dog has a perfect bawl mouth. I like to hear the hillside echo too.

Personally, I wouldn't like it. I prefer a dog that I can read throughout the trail. I want to know if the tracks gettin better or if the dog is struggling. I also want a dog that will bark enough on a cold track to keep my pups interested until they'll do it themselves.

The dog may get more and more open as you go. Reaching the age now though that you might have what you have. One thing about a tight mouthed dog is that you know they're not lieing. When they bark they smell something. If it doesn't work for you, just send it this way.

A lot of people like semi silent dogs on bobcats....seems a seasoned bobcat a lot of times will start moving when it hears dogs coming....where as the semi silent dogs kinda put the sneak attack on the cats...this makeing for shorter races...just my opinion

I would call this a catch dog, the perfect medicine for a tough or educated cat. If you dont want it, I know this guy that will take him. J.W.

i like it i had a female that would open up ever now and then maybe every hundred yards justto kinda let me know were she was at once it was jumped she opened up quite at bit more to me i really like it she wanted to catch it. i have had dogs that were real open its fun to listen to but i like catchin game

I love the ones like that, nothing worse IMO than a babbling idiot. When you hunt around a lot of cliff country like I do you learn to love a tight mouth track dog for bobcats. As was said before when they do open there's no doubt what's going on. Mine are tight mouth on bobcat tracks until it gets pretty hot and when the jump is made they blow up and scream. Just what I like I guess.

With the Garmins, who needs a dog that opens at all? Most guys just sit in their truck and watch the screen and wouldn't know if their dog barked or didn't(I've been giulty of this). Consistant fur in the tree is all that's important. My preference in a perfect world without any collars is a dog that always lets you know where they are going weather it's cold or hot.
I'm sure they are out there, but I've never seen a truly silent dog do any real cold trailing. Some silent dogs(the good cat catchers) will smell a track with some age and drift out looking for more and better scent, leapfroging the track until they jump the cat. That is not cold trailing in my opinion because those tracks arent truly cold and the dog isn't really trailing, they are drifting.
