Ever mounted one of your dogs?

When I first saw this topic the thing that came to mind is exactly what Dean and ZeluvaRIP69er are saying. It would be virtually impossible to make the dog look just like the hound you remember. Take all the pictures you want, try a 100 times, it wouldn't look the same. It has nothing to do with how "good" the taxidermist is.

Not to be a dick, but if you been in the business for 30 years you should no theres a market for pet taxidermy. Maybe you haven't seen a taxidermist that was worth a crap, but theres many VERY talented ones out there that are more than caple of mounting a "hound".

More than capable of mounting a hound, sure any one of them could mount a hound and I am sure it would look great, but it wouldn't have the features that gave the dog its special look. Any idiot knows that. 99% of taxidermists have a hell of a time making a cat look right. They all look like they have been sucking on sour grapes. I would hate to see what a dog I spent hundreds of hours with would look like. But maybe I am just picky.

Cor, there is NOT a market for pet taxidermy. In 30 years, I've had maybe 3-4 calls asking about mounting a domestic animal. I just looked in the three leading taxidermy catalogs and there isn't a single form for a domestic dog or cat in any of them. I know there is one form out there for a hound because I've seen it, but don't remember what company sells it. I think your missing the point about what everyone is saying. To capture the look of a pet you've owned for years would be impossible. It doesn't matter if you are the best taxidermist ever. You just can't get a mount to capture the look of your pet. I've judged four taxidermy competitions so I think I know what good taxidermy looks like. Please post up the catalog where all these taxidermists are buying thier forms to mount all these pets.

I know nothing about taxidermy, would love to learn though. I want to kill a quadimundi and have him sitting like a dog begging, and have both his front hands out, gonna set my TV remotes on them, someone wants to change the channel, they must first snatch the remote from him haha

Dean, if theres NO market for pet taxidermy then why is there so many that do it? Granted freeze drying seems to be more the route that most go with(still a form of taxidermy), but there is some that do traditional. United States also is not the only country that has taxidermy, overseas pet taxi seems to be pretty popular. Theres lots of areas where you can't hunt, or wild animals are limited. Also let me ask you how would you go about making a form line for lets say a dog when the anatomy would be different on dam near everyone. You got great danes breeding with poodles for crying out loud, you don't have whitetail breeding with elk. You make a form for that specific animal, you don't go in a catalog and order a form for snoodles. Thats why you don't seem them. Its not a whitetail where you can alter the form to fit a different size deer.

I don't think I'm missing the point. What you said was that it was "impossible", to give a pet the look. Impossible is a pretty strong word. I just don't think thats the case. I'm not saying that it would't be extremely difficult to make them look the same, just not impossible. Your trying to put personality back into the pet, now thats impossible.

Dean, I like reading your post and viewing your pics, I'm sure you're a great houndsman. But as far as taxidermy, throwing years out there as creditials, it really doesn't mean squat. This guy has been doing taxidermy for 39 years, I've seen better beginners.

Presumably, one only mounts the great physical specimen when it comes to game animals.
You probably wouldn't want to remember your best hound as a worn out saggy old thing, and you sure as heck wouldn't want to kill it on purpose in its prime!

Now, if you were a good taxidermist yourself and you had a great hound fall off a cliff or otherwise die in its prime, without getting torn up by a bear or a lion, maybe. Still, I like my hounds warm, with funky breath and loud mouths!

Still, it seems like the kind of thing they do in China. I remember a scandal awhile back about stuffed toy cats being real cats that the Chinese slaughtered, stuffed and shipped over here as childrens' toys. I even saw a few in stores and was creeped out by it. Unless you come from a culture like the ancient Peruvians who used to set out the mummies of their ancestors to enjoy a nice sunny day, I'd think twice about hunting with a guy that sent his prize hound to a taxidermist!

Just saw this post and have seen a few that are mounted and freeze dried and none look real good. Now I do cremate alot of pets for people and do alot of hunting dogs for people (mostly bird dogs) and most guys will always take them to there favorite hunting grounds and spread some of the ashes there or have a bird mounted with there pets remains inside the pet.

I have a bobcat mounted in a tree in my front room, and have often threatened to shoot a cull dog and have it mounted treeing on it. But I never seriously considered it, nor would I want to mount a good one after they got old and died off. Just me though either Roy Rogers or Gene Autry had a bluetick mounted, can't remember which

i believe Roy rogers had his Horse Mounted " TRIGGER" buddy of mine stopped a long time ago at the Roy Rogers Mueseum in Apple Valley ? California

Rimrock: You know you are getting OLD when the Sunday Evening Dinner with the wife turns to conversing about stuffed pets I do recall an old TV series RIN TIN TIN when the original dog a German Shepard died the owner had him mounted . Somewhere along the line she said that one of the collies that was in the Lassie series was also Mounted ,but that was a new one on me . She further claims that if I don't behave when I kick the bucket that she will probably have me skun out ,tanned and have me hanging on the wall with my other critters Like Rodney Dangerfield I don't get NO RESPECT at all.
