New to California
My name is Tobe and I just moved from Amarillo to the Central Valley California. I've got one Catahoula, Hote, who is trained as a hog dog. I love hunting and have been hunting my entire life. However I just got into hog doggin about a year and a half ago when I bought my pup. If anyone needs a tag along that would buy beer or help with other costs!! I'd really appreciate it. I don't know who needs to hunt worse...me or my dog! Any direction about laws on hog dogging and everything I need to know to get started would be great. I've been researching for about two months and I haven't turned much up.

Re: New to California
Can't hunt them at night, can't stick them and can't use more than three dogs per hunter. Can't use dogs when archery deer or bear season is open and one dog per hunter when the general deer season is open. Season is open year round with no bag or possession limit, just have to tag each one. Lots of them around but it takes time to find places to hunt as they to tend to flourish on private ground. Good luck,

Thanks for the tips. What caliber do you recommend? Is it that you can't use catch dogs or that you can't use a knife period? Cause I've caught my own hogs before with out a catch dog just so I could stick 'em. And I only have the one dog so I'm good on all those fronts. I'm just not havin luck with findin a place to go, I've never had to hunt public land before, so I'm in an all new ball game.

Re: New to California
Hey DC it was great gettin to meet ya and we definitely need to get out there, I got my shock collar back from Tri-Tronics today so as soon as I get my license I'm ready to go.
And I'm not that far south from Oakdale, but I'm no more than ten or fifteen minutes from Waterford, and if you hunt hogs then I would love to get in on it!
Sucks that I can't use my knife, typically how big are the hogs out here? I've got my a few small caliber guns, .20 ga and a few .22s, a .357 revolver, but the only heavy rifle I have is my .300, so what do guys out here typically carry? And how big are the hogs?

Re: New to California
i dont think you can use any 22 cal on pigs here , and i would say the average pig will weigh 150. your biggest problem here will be finding a place to hunt but there is some good public land if you look hard enough

22 is ok IF....you can find a center fire cartridge. no rim fire for big game. ive used a cherry little 17 to take a few hogs.

I've used everything from a .17 HMR to knives, to shotguns, to big bore rifles, I just didn't know what could legally be used here. And from what DC told me there is a public place not to far from where I'm at that might have pigs, so I'm gonna give that a shot the first chance I get.

Wow, that's gotta be a big change for you, Amarillo to Oakdale. I went the other way. You'll be missing Texas pretty soon if I had to bet. I love California, just hate all the laws and to many people for me.
I think you'll find the hogs to be bigger in Ca. It's a lot better terrain for a hog and easier to make a living for them. You know how tough Texas can be. I don't nesecerily think they are bigger framed but definitely fatter in Ca.
I am actually sitting here in a hotel room in Fresno right now, watching it rain. Boy have y'all had some moisture out here this year. I've had 1" since June and it's dry, dry, dry. Have a good time here in my home state. When the Sacramento, Bay Area, LA and San Diego people leave call me and I'll be moving back the next day.
