Dont expect him to go taking off deep in the woods. Hes really young. Lots of time ahead of him. The fact that he is following a trail is great. Just be patient and take baby steps. Take him out as much as possible in the woods during the day and at night. Not going far and coming back to you and whining is just a confidence issue. This will all come together for him over time.

At 4 months old you shouldn't be thinking about breaking him of anything. Just do what montananative said and encourage that scent trailing. Take him to the woods and keep it fun and positive. He just needs confidence and that comes with time.

john wick doesn't recommend doing much of anything with a dog until it about 1 year old. be careful with the drags. they do more for the person than they do the dog.

I totally Agree, After I get a pup started I only have it run live game. A caged coon can be fun, but also teaches a hound to be lazy. Drags can teach dogs bad chit like running backtracks if you over do it. But it sounds like your pup is on the right track, Just encourage him don't scold him for anything at that age.
