In my box I put Cedar shavings and straw, on my box I use a good indoor/out door carpet.

Im guessing by reading your post that your looking for on top of your box. You can use any carpet made and it will work but you get what you pay for. If you use home carpet you might get 2 yrs out of it, if you spent a little more and got some indoor outdoor you might get 3-5 yrs out of it. But if you want it to last fine an upholstery shop that does boats and get you some good marine carpet with the rubber backing. There is an outfit out of Redding Ca. that sells some really good stuff that Randy Oller showed me on his box thats around 25 yrs old. I have used it on many boxes and its worth every penny. If you want the number let me know they can tell you the brand and you can see if you can find it back east where you live.

Does the Marine carpet's rubber backing make it water tight?

Dale it seams to but not 100% on that I dont know if Randy treated the wood under his or not but it was going on around 25-26 yrs and was still in good shape so I would say it must. I can get you the number to the shop if you like and Im sure they could tell you more about it they have been around for a long time and selling this same stuff so i would think they know alot about it.

I use carpet with the rubber on the back. Before I put it on the box I put down some roofing tar. Works as glue to keep the carpet from shifting around and also keeps the box top water tight. The top of my wooden dog box doesn't leak at all. When I have changed the carpet it pealed off fairly easy and seems to work pretty good.

The last thing i have tried was a piece of rubber roofing, under outdoor carpet, seems to work pretty good, and waterproof also.

Shower pan membrane works very nice under the marine type carpet. Can glue it down with spray glue etc.Can keep the wood from warping and rotting.
