Re: what vehilce to get
anything with four wheels and a little clearence will get you to the woods
Re: what vehilce to get
montananative Speaks the truth! I used a 99 Camaro to coon hunt out of. It was a v6 that got about 24mpg and had enough room for myself, a dog and any coons we took. I also coon hunt out of an 87 3/4 ton Chevrolet. It gets about 9mpg LOL!! I used the Camaro to squirrel hunt... the truck stayed at home. I don't hunt any crazy spots so a 4wd isn't mandatory. Allthough I do hunt a spot that is at a bottom of a hill and during snow and ice the 4wd is the only thing that got me down and up.

Toyota Tacoma '98 to '04 with a 4 cylinder. Decent on fuel and will cost almost nothing to maintain. Throw a dog box in the back and your ready. The best part is you can drive them for years and still get what you payed for them. They lack a little power compared to some trucks but have plenty. Should have no problem finding one for under $7000.
Good Luck

1994 toyota 4 banger single cab with four wheel drive. mine has 250000 never missed a beat. Has been through the ringer jumped, sunken more times than a sumberine, rulled over about a bozen times. I tried to hall ass across awer creek this sping and didnt make it got stuck, and got out of it in time I ended up down the creek about 100 yards untill i finally made it to shore. the truck went about 500 yards untill it ended up in a pool. the only thing you could see was about of 6 inches of the roof, pulled it out changed the oil after running back to the house and it started right up. YOTA ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: what vehilce to get
Catdogs, I have a 6 cyl now but when it comes to maintenance and such the 4 cyl is sure cheap. I have had almost every engine Toyota makes at one time or another and the 2.7 4 cyl in my '99 was outstanding. Still own the truck. I was thinking a little four cylinder would be perfect for a high school kid. I do like my 6 cyl too.
Herc14, you can find them in auto or manual transmission. Either one would do you just fine but with my auto I replace the brakes every 20,000 miles. My manual truck has only had the fronts done once and the rears are still original, it has 190,000 miles on it. I thought the rears were bad once but they were just full of mud. I did the clutch at 150,000 and replaced a tie rod end at about 125,000. Steering bushings will wear out but you can get a whole kit for $30. Very cheap truck to own and very capable in the snow and woods.

Re: what vehilce to get
im 22 and have a 98 toyota tacoma 2.7 4 banger ha dit 2 years now ran her dry of oil hit 4 cross ditches doin a 60 miles an hour and roled! it im hard on it! and just got a check up on her all i needed was 4 shockes and a right upper ball joint hahah and i love the gas milage not sure what it is but its half or les of all my buddies trucks! its the only way to go if you dont have to haul anything plus a quad or snowmobile will fit hope that helps!
Re: what vehilce to get
You could even look at little suvs, they are considerably cheaper than pickups. 3 years ago i got a 98 ford explorer 4x4 with 125k miles for 2750. It has 160k on it now, I have sunk it to the windows in a river, I have been really bad with oil changes, my wife has hit a deer on one side, a concrete divide on the other side. The thing still runs amazing, the only thing i have ever done to it is replace the battery. you have room in the back for all your gear, you can even throw a dog box in it. youll be coon hunting so you wont have to worry about having a dog outa the box to rig. and if you need the bed space of a truck get a small trailor! save yourself a few thousand that way.
Re: what vehilce to get
the only thing i would reccomend is an extra cab on a truck that sure is handy for all the extras that go along with hounding. it will probably cost a little more but well worth it.imo

Re: what vehilce to get
Don't buy a Prerunner, spring for the extra $1000 and get four wheel drive.
Re: what vehilce to get
So I want four wheel drive?
